But his is also the time for the "National Survey of Public Library Funding and Technology Access" from ALA. Two surveys in one season seems like too much to ask, but both surveys are important. The ALA survey has helped the library community state its case with public officials for more broadband and more internet workstations for public libraries. By completing the survey you will provide ALA with more ammunition to do this. You should have received a postcard recently with a library code and url to help you begin the online survey. But you can just go directly to http://survey.pnmi.com/ , use the code "lookup" to get your library's code number, and then begin. Thanks for helping out with this important project. Connecticut College Philosophy Chair Andrew Pessin gave a wonderful hour-long talk about his book, THE GOD QUESTION. Very lively discussion on the stimulating ideas he laid out in a lecture that whisked us from Plato to Quantum theory - whew! He's an appealing and witty speaker,  and I'm having him back in the spring to talk about his other book, THE 60 SECOND PHILOSOPHER. The audience just loved him, and he drew an interestingly broad demographic; older folks, boomers, even a couple of bright teens. You can reach him via his website, www.andrewpessin.com . (DGI) is proud to recognize our own senior cataloger/project manager Tatyana Eckstrand, compiler of the new ALA title, "The Librarian's Book of Quotes." ALA describes this gem of a book as follows: "Celebrate librarianship and the love of libraries with this charming collection of quotes! Tatyana Eckstrand has compiled nearly three hundred of the most insightful, thought-provoking, and inspiring aphorisms about the library profession. Writers from Shakespeare to Ray Bradbury and librarians from John Cotton Dana to Nancy Pearl are gathered together to sing the praises of librarians' skills, values, and the amazing institutions they support. Citations are provided to the original source material, and a handy biographical dictionary provides background on individuals who may not be household names. With its broad selection of sayings that pay honor to their work and commitment, The Librarian's Book of Quotes is a perfect gift for information professionals and lovers of libraries." Frankly, we couldn't agree more! Tani will be signing copies of her work at DGI's exhibit table #322 at NELA on October 18-20 at the CT Convention Center in Hartford, and we hope you will stop by. Autographed copies will be available for a discounted price of $20.00 (cash only). We'll have a limited supply, so get there early - this book sold out at the ALA conference in Chicago in July. Book signings will be on Sunday from 5-6pm; Monday from 2:30-3:30pm, and Tuesday from 11:30am-12:30pm. Not only is this a lovely gift book for your favorite colleague or library lover, but think how handy it will be when you're struggling for the perfect, pithy quote to dazzle your local legislator/board member/potential donor as you write yet another plea for funding... Message-ID: <4.3.2.7.2.20091005103012.0398df08@192.168.0.1> The Donohue Group, Inc. We look forward to seeing many of our library colleagues at NELA. If you are responsible for submitting this report and do not have the 2009 instructions and password for your library, please let me know. I have two important announcements concerning the report: 1. Recent legislation (signed into law today) waives the maintenance of effort tax appropriation requirement for those principal public libraries who are applying for State Aid this year. This means that if your library's town budget was cut significantly for FY2010, and it falls below the three-year average for FY2007 thru FY2009, then you will still be eligible for State Aid this fiscal year. That is good news for libraries suffering cuts. 2. Many libraries are having difficulties answering this new survey question: "2.7 Total registered borrowers, resident and non-resident". If your library can't answer this easily, please feel free to answer "N/A" to this question. If you want to make an estimate, call or email me for details on how you might do this. As always, let me know if you have questions. In our library policies handbook, we have included a selection of ALA documents as an appendix: the Library Bill of Rights; the Freedom to Read Statement; the Freedom to View Statement; Free Access to Libraries for Minors; and Access for Children and Young Adults to Nonprint Materials. As they work on streamlining the policies, the board is wondering if it is particularly necessary to include these documents, or if a simple reference to the ALA's URL would suffice. Do other libraries incorporate full copies of the ALA documents in their policy handbooks, or do you just make a brief reference to them? (Or do you not reference them at all; and if not, why?) Our policies certainly reflect the core beliefs contained within the ALA statements, and we use them as guidelines. Obviously, there's no harm in including them, but is it a requirement when putting together a policy handbook? Feel free to respond off-list. The next phase will take place on Tuesday, October 27 when the following changes will take place: 1. The screen you see when you log into iconn.org will change to what you see in this mockup: http://model-rqst-agent.auto-graphics.com/homepages/customerwide/iconnsearch_long.asp 2. Finding Articles and Finding Books will be accomplished with two separate search widgets: a. For public and school libraries, the Find Articles search widget will launch searches into Gale's PowerSearch. For academic libraries, the Find Articles search widget will continue to launch searches into Auto-Graphics' federated search system. b. The Find Books search widget will launch searches into reQuest (as it does today). The Find Books widget has been enhanced to make it easier to limit searches by format type. c. Each widget will have its own Help link. 3. The search widget on each of the school classic menu pages will be replaced with the Find Articles widget (described above), which in turn will be customized to search content appropriate for elementary, middle and high school levels, respectively. 4. The downloadable search widgets will be made available in a separate release in November. We will be scheduling informational webinars during the next two weeks to demo these changes and answer questions using a test system. Another message will be sent with dates and times for these sessions. These changes are being made primarily to improve the usability of the system for all users. We will be tracking user feedback on the changes using the Take Our Survey online survey questionnaire and using the online comment forms. In addition, to support future usability improvements, we will also be capturing usage statistics on every link, tab and drop-down menu on the new start pages. We hope you like the changes! She will discuss her crafting of the work, will answer audience questions and will autograph books which will be available for purchase. Recently released, The Embers is a riveting family saga of secrets, loss and the complexities of love. A beautifully structured debut novel, The Embers weaves between the past and the present to deftly uncover the intricate layers of family and tragedy and the struggle to reconcile old skeletons with hopes for the future. Seating at this event will be limited. Reservations are suggested. Please phone (860) 927-3761 or email kmlinfo@biblio.org or better yet, stop by the library and sign up in person to reserve your space. This program is free and open to the public. According to Bass, The Embers actually started as a screenplay but the concept felt more like a novel than a film. Once she started writing the story as a novel, she found it to be "tremendously liberating." Ironically, she says, "The funny thing is, I now think the book would make a great film." Hyatt Bass is an award-winning film director. Her most recent film, Seventy Five Degrees in July, marked her debut as a feature film director. She also wrote the screenplay and was a producer on the film. Prior, she wrote, directed, produced and edited the short film, Just Desert, in Los Angeles, where she worked as a production assistant on Sister Act, a camera assistant on Tombstone and an assistant editor and camera assistant at Roger Corman's infamous Concorde Films. Bass received her BA from Princeton University. She lives with her husband, Josh Klausner, and their two sons and two miniature schnauzers in New York City. Publishers Weekly praised The Embers, "Director, producer and screenwriter Bass creates a riveting narrative that digs into the notion that 'there is nothing that happens to a child that does not implicate the parent in some way'. Bass's excavation of a complex familial labyrinth is an elegant testament to the beautiful mess that is family." Laurie Muchnick of Bloomberg.com said, "Bass. is a sensitive observer of family dynamics, of the way people can fail to really see the ones they love.. The Embers [is] contemplative and psychologically attuned." The Kent Memorial Library is one of the town's most important resources. Marcel and his wife, veteran journalist Bethe Dufresne traveled there this past summer with the Norwich-based non-profit, American Friends of Kenya (AFK) and chronicled what AFK did in a series for the Hartford Courant. Here's a sampling of Marcel's images: http://picasaweb.google.com/professionalseminar/PicasaWebLIbraryTour?aut hkey=Gv1sRgCIDogIG6z-Gtdw# David Kapp tells me that because of AFK's library roots, he has featured several stories in the newsletter about them, so I thought you might have an added interest in this photos. Since his exhibit here is scheduled to come down soon, Marcel would like to determine if there's interest in having the photos travel to another library in the state. If you have any questions, please let me know. Or, if you'd like to talk with Marcel directly, please feel free to contact him at: marcel.dufresne@uconn, or by phone at: 860 486-3101. We want to take a snapshot of a typical day in the life of Connecticut's libraries. What would Connecticut be like if there were no libraries? What services do we provide every day that go unheralded? The CLA Publicity Committee is sponsoring "Snapshot: One Day in the Life of Connecticut's Libraries" on February 18, 2010 and is asking academic and public libraries to help make it a success. We have created a brief survey to collect data. We are sending you a link to the form ahead of time so that you can see the kinds of data we will be collecting (How many people came through your doors? How many people used your computers? How many story hours did you offer today - to how many attendees?) You'll be able to print the survey out ahead of time so that you can see what kind of information we'd like you to capture. All of the data will be collected online. We will collate all the information we receive and package it so that you will have powerful statistics available during the next budget season. If you can, please plan a special event for this day so that you can capture it in story and in photos. Perhaps you have a story time planned - you could contact parents ahead of time to arrange permission to take photos. We'd like you to take photos and we'll have instructions showing how you can easily post your photos to Flickr. We are also hoping to gather quotes from library supporters, so plan to include your customers in Snapshot Day by encouraging them to write comments expressing how important libraries are to them. We'll provide downloadable forms and posters to help you publicize and record the event. If you can't participate on February 18, just pick an alternate date to make your count. We will need to have all counts in by February 26, so feel free to pick a date in the weeks preceding or following February 18. Our website http://snapshotctlib.wordpress.com includes more detailed information and the link to the survey. Please visit the website to access the forms and posters and to view instructions for uploading photos and comments. "Snapshot" is based on a project of the same name created by the New Jersey State Library and the New Jersey Library Association. We are grateful to them for allowing us to "borrow" this successful idea. New Jersey libraries sponsored their second snapshot day this month. We hope that your library will participate in Snapshot Day. Our goals are to heighten awareness of what happens during a typical day in Connecticut's libraries and to capture some valuable statistics, stories and photos. We will also strive to make participation as easy as possible. Funded by the American Library Association and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, the survey provides important data regarding public library Internet connectivity, use, funding, and services. Since 1994, these surveys have been used by the American Library Association and others to inform and educate policymakers, funders, elected officials, supporters, and the media - at the local, state and national levels about the issues and needs your library faces in providing public computer and Internet access services and resources. Your participation in the survey is extremely important, and directly impacts the ability of ALA and others to advocate on behalf of public libraries and the tremendous contribution public libraries make to their communities through their public access Internet services and resources. Data from the study appeared most recently in USA Today (http://www.usatoday.com/tech/2009-09-01-library-computers-internet_N.htm) in a discussion of how public libraries help job seekers. The survey is open through November 6, 2009. To participate, go to http://www.plinternetsurvey.org. You will need an ID number, which you may look up on the website. Questions regarding the survey should be directed to support@plinternetsurvey.org or 301.405.9445. Thank you for your willingness to participate! Additional information regarding the survey and previous survey results is available at http://www.liicenter.org/plinternet. Our Library Commission is trying to fit somewhere between too simple and "too many rules". We do not currently employ  security personnel.   We are trying to word the policy from a positive viewpoint. The last six months has been much more difficult with many people having difficulty sharing computer space, and an older patron who is clearly having difficulty realizing his behavior is not appropriate. Even spats in the ADA parking spaces:there has been yelling and photos taken over a simple mistake, upsetting regular patrons.      Thanks for any insight.   Best,   Eileen Branciforte -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... As a result, effective November 1, we will be discontinuing all ProQuest newspapers except the Hartford Courant and the Historical Hartford Courant. The latter two newspapers are the most heavily used newspapers in iCONN. All libraries will continue to have access to the New York Times (1985 - present), Christian Science Monitor (1996 - present), and London Times (7/1985 - present) through Gale, both individually and through PowerSearch. In addition, academic libraries will continue to have access to the Wall Street Journal through ABI Inform. On November 1, the Newspaper link on the new start pages will go to a Web page that will present individual links to all newspapers that will continue to be available through iCONN. We regret having to discontinue access to these resources but the current budget situation makes it necessary. Grant awards will range between $3,000 and $25,000 with the exception of Community Needs Assessment grants which will be funded up to $1,500. The Community Needs Assessment grants will also have a different, simplified grant application. 1. Collaborations to Support Literacy for Children and Young Adults Grants will be awarded to public libraries for collaborative programs that target children or young adults (and their parents, care givers, and teachers) and support literacy development. These programs should include efforts to bring children and teens who are not regular library users into the library. Funds may be used to provide training, technical assistance, education, and materials to programs and agencies serving young people in community settings. 2. Programs for Children and Young Adults in Poverty Grants will be awarded to assist libraries in establishing sustainable programs and services that directly target the developmental, literacy or information needs of children and young adults living in poverty. 3. Services to People with Disabilities Grants will be awarded to assist libraries in providing or enhancing services to people of all ages with disabilities and their families and caregivers. The special needs addressed by these programs may be physical, developmental, emotional or learning disabilities. Grants may include (but are not limited to) the purchase of equipment and/or software that makes information content accessible to people with disabilities. Library staff training in disability awareness and sensitivity will be an important component of these grants. 4. Programs for Multi-lingual Populations Grants will be awarded for programs that enhance library services to people of all ages who are non-native English speakers. These outreach programs may include developing collections in the languages spoken in the community as well as providing services that address the needs of immigrants and those for whom English is not their primary language. In addition, these projects may support the development of ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) collections and services for the many newcomers who seek opportunities to practice the English language and must include at least one partner agency. 5. Programs for Older Adults Grants will be awarded to assist libraries in providing or enhancing services and collections to older adults. 6. Programs for Young Adults Grants will be awarded to public libraries for collaborative programs that target the specific needs of young adults (Ages 12 - 17). Grant programs will reach out and serve teens and engage them with reading and with the library. Priority will be assigned to applications demonstrating programs that involve meaningful collaboration between the public library, the schools and young adults in the community. 7. Community Needs Assessment Grants will be awarded to assist libraries in performing community needs assessments as a step in planning library services. Completion of this assessment may be seen as the critical first step of a larger program grant application or for strengthening services to individuals of diverse geographic, cultural, and socioeconomic backgrounds, to individuals with disabilities, and to individuals with limited functional literacy or information skills. Each library system (main library and branches) may submit applications in more than one category but only one application per category. Public libraries may apply for grants under the categories Collaborations to Support Children?s Literacy and Programs for Young Adults. Public libraries, public school libraries, public institutional libraries and public academic libraries are eligible to apply in all other grant categories. Grant applications must be submitted by March 5, 2010. Grant awards will be made at the May 2010 State Library Board meeting. The grant period is twelve months: from July 1, 2010 to June 30, 2011. A local match of 25% of the amount of federal funds requested is required. The grant applications are available online at http://ct.webjunction.org/ct/lsta. The Division of Library Development will be offering several grant workshops. Please see http://ct.webjunction.org/ct/lsta/-/articles/content/83120782 for details. There are three types of grant workshop sessions: 1.) Program grants; 2.) Community Needs Assessment grants; and 3.) Outcome-based evaluation. Attendance at one of the Program Grant sessions is required in order to submit a grant application; attendance at an Outcome Based Evaluation session is strongly advised. Community Needs Assessment Grant workshops are also mandatory and will be held separately both online and in person. The Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA) funds are provided through the Institute of Museum and Library Services, the primary source of federal support for the nation?s 123,000 libraries and 17,500 museums. The Institute's mission is to create strong libraries and museums that connect people to information and ideas. We are hosting an event at Southern Connecticut State University on Tuesday, November 17th, 2009 from 6-8 pm. Those passionate about librarianship are encouraged to attend! Visit http://speedmentoring.pbworks.com for a signup sheet and more information. *How does it work?* Each librarian mentor will be paired with a student. After brief introductions the pair will talk about any aspect of librarianship that interests them for five minutes. Then the students will rotate to the next mentor and continue this process until they have spoken with all of the mentors. It is kind of like speed dating, except the focus here is on building professional relationships to help students with their career goals, and for mentors to exchange ideas and address concerns from those new to the profession. Speed Mentoring is a great way for librarians to share their experiences, and for students to connect with a variety of librarians and learn about our diverse profession. *Details* Speed Mentoring at Southern Connecticut State University hosted by the Connecticut Library Association Career Development Committee & SCSU Information & Library Science Department Tuesday, November 17, 2009, 6-8 pm SCSU Engleman Hall Room 121 A-B in the B wing Questions?
