Subject: Go Libraries !! Go Denise Merrill !!
Dear Library Buddies:
It's 11:54 pm. The House of Representatives just passed House Bill
6802. Most importantly, at the very end of the all-day debate, House
Majority Leader Denise Merrill took the Floor and stated THAT THE MOST
INTERESTING AND MOST FREQUENT COMMUNICATIONS THAT SHE RECEIVED WERE FROM
THE LIBRARIANS THROUGHOUT THE STATE. Denise read from one of the
letters that she received from a librarian. WOW
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! AWESOME
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
You should all watch the telecast of the debate. You can watch the
telecast of the House Debate on the CTN website: www.ct-n.com. (the
8/31/09 House Debate). Fast-forward all the way to the end and watch
Denise Merrill's comments.
The Senate will pass the bill early Tuesday morning; and the Governor is
expected to sign the bill; or at least not veto the bill and allow it to
become law. I'll let you all know.
OK. THERE'S NO REST FOR THE WEARY. YOU ALL HAVE TO GET BACK TO WORK ON
TUESDAY MORNING. YOU MUST SEND STRONG THANK YOU NOTES TO DENISE MERRILL
AND TO CHRISTOPHER DONOVAN AND TO DON WILLIAMS AND TO MARTIN LOONEY AND
TO JOHN GERAGOSIAN AND TO TONI HARP AND TO ANDREW FLEISCHMANN AND TO
ANDREW MAYNARD !!! I'M NOT KIDDING!! PLEASE SEND THE THANK YOU NOTES
ASAP AND ASK YOUR COLLEAGUES TO SEND NOTES. THESE LAWMAKERS FOUGHT HARD
IN THE TRENCHES FOR US AGAINST DRACONIAN (I LOVE THAT WORD) CUTS AND
THEY ALL DESERVE OUR THANKS AND PRAISE !!
Peace Friends.

Good Afternoon,
Another piece of good news from the budget that was passed by the legislature yesterday/last night is that funding for the CT Education Network was maintained.
For those of you unable to stay up to watch the full budget debate you can see it on CTN, video on demand. Go to:
http://www.ctn.state.ct.us/ondemand.asp
Click on the link to the House or Senate Session. Particularly interesting is Rep. Denise Merrill's comments about libraries at about 4 hours and 45 minutes into the House session.

Subject: [Conntech] Annual Report Reminder
Message-ID: <4A9E2CBD.7C78.0033.0@cslib.org>
Attention Public Library Directors (or those in charge of doing the
Annual Report):
This is a reminder that the survey for the Annual Report 2008-2009 and
Application for State Aid 2009-2010 is up and ready for submissions. If
you did not receive your LOGIN and PASSWORD information from me in July,
or have misplaced it, let me know and I will resend it to you.
Take note:
1. The Bibliostat survey interface has changed. It will look a bit
different, but work better (I hope).
2. Town/City budget cuts could make you ineligible for the State Aid
grant for principal public libraries. If so, feel free to call me to
find out what your options are.
3. A reminder that when counting Reference Questions, be sure NOT to
include directional transactions or questions of rules or policies. And
if your library is offering ?Book a Librarian? sessions, you should
count any reference questions you receive in these sessions as you would
if they came during standard reference desk duty.
4. We have a new federal question this year asking for a count off ALL
library borrowers (resident and non-resident). If you can?t provide
this number this year, either answer N/A or make an estimate for this
figure (for example you could use the ratio of non-resident circulation
to overall circulation and, using this ratio with the number of resident
borrowers, come up with an approximate number for non-resident
borrowers.)
If you have any questions about the survey, please call or email me.
Many, many thanks to all early submitters!!

Message-ID: <4A9E35E7.360B.00D7.0@cslib.org>
CT Library Community,
The long budget process is over! As I'm sure you have seen, the legislature passed a state budget and the Governor has decided to let it become law on September 8 without her signature. She is making some line item vetoes but nothing that impacts libraries. So below I've listed, once again, our final numbers. There isn't a separate line for the service centers but they have been maintained. Also, CEN has maintained their funding. On behalf of all of us at the State Library, thank you to all the supporters of Connecticut's libraries.

State-Wide Digital Library (iCONN) - All databases will be retained.
$1,968,794
Interlibrary Loan Delivery Service (Ccar) - All service will be maintained.
$266,434
Legal/Legislative Library Materials (State Library Book Budget) This maintains funding at last year's level.
$1,140,000
State-Wide Data Base Program (reQuest) The statewide catalog and web portal will be maintained.
$674,696
Info Anytime - This represents a reduction negotiated with CLC and the Appropriations Committee to maintain the service. Last year's funding was $150,000.
$42,500
Support Cooperating Library Service Units (CLC) This restores funding to last year's pre- 5% reduction appropriated level
$350,000
Grants to Public Libraries - This maintains last year's funding level.
$347,109
Connecticard Payments - This maintains funding at last year's level.
$1,226,028

We will also explore different formats for podcasting and learn how to publish our masterpieces. Even if you don't want to podcast, learning to record and edit audio is handy if you want to create online tutorials, videos, or record events and programs held in your library. Topics covered include: what software and hardware is needed, steps for creating & publishing a podcast, hands on time recording & editing audio with Audacity, importing music to enhance your audio (copyright free of course!), ideas for podcasting in the library and much more.

Subject: [Conntech] Author of Cooking and Screaming at New Haven Library
Sept. 9

Noted blogger (www.nosheteria.com) Adrienne Kane will discuss her new book,
*Cooking & Screaming: Finding My Own Recipe For Recovery, *on Wednesday.
Sept. 9, 6-7pm at New Haven Public Library, 133 Elm St. Kane is a food
writer, originally from the California Bay Area, now living in New Haven.
Copies of her book will be available for sale/signing.
*About the book*: Adrienne Kane always loved food, waiting as a child by the
oven for cookies to emerge or fueling long hours of work on her senior
thesis with a satisfying tagliatelle. But just two weeks before her college
graduation, she suffered a hemorrhagic stroke that left her paralyzed on the
right side of her body. Once a dancer and aspiring teacher, she was now
dependent on her loved ones, embarrassed by her disability and facing an
identity crisis. The next several years were a blur of doctors, therapists,
rehabilitation and frustration--until she got back into the kitchen.
In *Cooking
and Screaming*, Kane describes how cooking becomes her escape and solace.
Publishers Weekly says ?Kane nicely integrates memories of her childhood,
family portraits?as well as many wonderful recipes into this story of
recovery.?
There is no charge for this program, and free parking is available. For more
information, and to register, visit www.adriennekane.eventbrite.com or call

The CLA ADA Committee is proud to present:
It Takes More Than a Ramp: Disability Awareness in Your Library
Physical access is just the beginning?
Do you know:
How to escort a blind person?
Whether you should open a door for a person using a wheelchair?
The best way to design an accessible program flyer?
If you?re not sure and you want to make your library as welcoming as
possible for everyone in your community, this is the workshop for you.
In this interactive program we?ll explore the definition and
incidence of disabilities in Connecticut and what the ADA requires
libraries to do. You?ll experience what it is like to have a
disability, learn about disability etiquette, and be introduced to
resources you can use for information and referral and for purchasing
equipment and materials for your library.
Barbara Klipper, the session leader, has presented a similar workshop
for the staff of The Ferguson Library in Stamford, where she is
responsible for the materials and services of the library?s Special
Needs Center. She serves as chair of the ALSC committee Library
Services for Special Population Children and Their Caregivers and is the
ALSC representative to the ASCLA Accessibility Assembly.

Dear Library Director:
I am a Graduate student at Southern Connecticut State University. To complete my Master?s degree I must conduct a research project. I am examining how electronic books are impacting the publishing industry and public libraries across Connecticut.
This survey is directed toward the librarian in charge of electronic book purchasing. This survey will be used to determine the demand for e-books in Connecticut public libraries and what types of e-books and hand held reading devices are being offered to the public via Connecticut libraries.
The survey was put together using SurveyMonkey. All answers are completely confidential. The taking of the survey is anonymous. No personal or library names are asked for. All data will be kept secure. An application has been sent to the Institutional Review Board. A copy of the application is available upon request. Please contact me or my project advisor with any questions or concerns.
If you would like to participate in this survey please click on the link below or copy and paste it into your web browser. Please respond by September 30, 2009.

Everyone:
Were changes made to your library's network this summer?
Maintain your access to iCONN and its subscription resources by reporting any IP changes that took place. Send a complete list of valid IPs for your library to me at ehansen@cslib.org
If you're getting iCONN's login screen from inside the library it means we don't have your most current IP information. Libraries should land on the iCONN Search screen when they go to www.iconn.org
Best Practice: Report your IP changes to both iCONN and the database vendors. Many libraries use a combination of vendor and iCONN URLs so this way you're covered regardless of whose URL you're using.

Subject: Libraries and the First Amendment Exhibit
Hello, my name is Nathan Richie and I am the director of exhibits and programs at the McCormick Freedom Museum in Chicago. In July, the Freedom Museum created a brand new exhibit Libraries and the First Amendment . The exhibit explores the many ways that libraries are both bastions and battlegrounds of First Amendment freedoms. Libraries and the First Amendment has two main components. First is the virtual exhibit at www.FreedomInLibraries.org that features case studies, interactives, and comment boards. The second is a versatile poster show that transforms any public library into an exhibition space. The exhibit is offered as a free service to any library.
I thought this would be a great resource that you might like to share with your constituents. It is especially suitable for libraries who are recognizing Banned Books week. If you have any suggestions about how we might be able to spread the word about this program with people in your state, I would greatly appreciate it. Do you have any type of newsletter, journal, email, list serve or other method that might be appropriate to disseminate this information? If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me at nrichie@freedommuseum.us .
Kind regards,
Nathan Richie

Subject: [Conntech] ACLB Leadership Conference Canceled - but good things are
still happening
Message-ID: <4AA7B7C6.360B.00D7.0@cslib.org>
>From Stan Seigel, President of ACLB
ACLB: What's in "it" for you?
Whether you're a Library Trustee, or a Library Director, ACLB the
Association of Connecticut Library Boards is still, especially for
you.
For more than 40 years, ACLB has served Connecticut library Trustees
and Directors with ongoing programs and services including such
diverse
subjects as:
Advocacy; Board Organization; Board Training; Budget; Documentation;
Effective Meetings; Evaluation; Job Descriptions; Legal Issues; Legal
Responsibilities; Marketing; Planning; Policy Development; Recruitment
of New Trustees; Staff Compensation; Personnel Issues; and Working
with
the Director.
These programs and services were accomplished by providing ACLB
members
with the ACLB Connecticut Public Library Trustees Handbook; meetings
with the Boards of individual libraries, consultations, and
presentations at the annual ACLB Leadership Conference.
Although this year we have determined that it would be necessary for
us
to forego our scheduled Leadership Conference for 2009.
Coincidentally, our planned theme was ?Tapping the Money Tree - with
emphasis on how to secure contributory and grant funding especially in
these troublesome economic times.? Coincidentally it was these
?troublesome economic times? which hit Connecticut libraries
particularly hard that we were unable to secure a minimum required
audience to defray the expenses of the Conference. This cancellation
does not mean the "end" of our Leadership Conference, merely a
"postponement" from 2009.
Be assured, however, that ACLB is "alive and well" and has, and will
continue to have, a great deal of continuing and new services useful
to
the Connecticut Library Trustees and Library Directors alike.
We are planning membership in, and participation in ACLB opportunities
and activities that may very well be more important and useful than
ever
considering the extraordinary pressure of budget and staff
limitations.
Toward that end, ACLB has expanding its own Board compliment and
capability - we have enabled the addition of Library Directors,
retired
yet still active in the profession, as members of the ACLB Board. This
will broaden the ACLB Board experience to better serve the needs of
its
members and the Connecticut Library Community at large.
In addition we are working toward instituting an ?ACLB Trustee
Certification Program." Working with members of the ACLB Board and a
task force of other Trustees and Directors,
ACLB is designing a core curriculum and certification program. By
participating in and completing the program, Trustees will gain the
knowledge needed to do their jobs more effectively and be recognized
for
their efforts. The bottom line of this program will be to enable
libraries to better provide excellent services to their communities as
supported by its ?Certified? Trustees.
ACLB holds "liaison membership" representation on the Boards of the
Connecticut Library Association (CLA) and the Friends of Connecticut
Libraries (FOCL) as well as with the Connecticut State Library (CSL).
These relationships help broaden the ACLB capability in its service to
its membership.
In addition to the ACLB website: www.aclb.org - please contact us by
email at info@aclb.org for any questions, or other information you may
have.

Hi!
Came across a great link thru the ALA List - Prtalk concerning how libraries
should
plan for H1N1 Swine Flu:
http://www.nysl.nysed.gov/libdev/libs/h1n1flu.pdf
It's from the NY State Library.
Is there a similar publication put out by any group in CT???
In the NY booklet it talks about cleaning down the keyboards of your
internet terminals.
How often does your library do this? Every morning before opening?? What
do you use?
I know you couldn't do after every patron use.

The following workshops have been scheduled for October 2009. To
register access the Continuing Education Calendar of Events at
http://evanced.info/cslib/evanced/eventcalendar.asp
Excel 2007 Pt.1 & Pt.2 - Oct. 1st & Oct. 8th (MLSC)
This two day workshop will bring you from Excel novice to advanced
professional. It is expected that participants will attend day 1 and day
2 of one session.
The Reference Interview - Oct. 2nd (WLSC) & Nov. 6th (MLSC)
One of the basic services of the library is the delivery of information
during what is commonly referred to as the reference interview. This
program will examine the role of the reference interview, the components
that make up the reference interview, and offer strategies for improving
results. You will learn about: librarian patron relationships,
importance of determining wants vs. needs, impedimets to success,
impossible questions and more.
Dreamweaver CS3 Pt.1 & Pt.2 - Oct.5th & Oct.7th (Darien PL)
Dramweaver CS3 is a powerful web design software that allows beginners
to create professional looking web sites. This two- day workshop is
intended to be taken in order. Topics covered include: setting up a
website, basic editing, creating links and graphics, using tables and
templates and much, much more.
Perequisites: Experience using the Web and a Windows based computer. No
web development experience required, but it is certainly helpful. Those
with experience will have time during the class to explore additional
Dreamweaver options and features.
Online Outreach & Marketing - Oct. 6th (Darien PL)
n the Web 2.0 environment, libraries need to learn to reach beyond
traditional ideas of outreach and take advantage of new tools for
connecting with their users online. During this full day workshop we'll
discuss a variety of ideas for libraries to get information out into
spaces beyond their library web sites and to connect with their users on
their own online turf. We'll look at community events calendars,
monitoring local blogs and other forums, social review sites and much
more.
**This is a hands-on session, so come prepared with information about
your library, services and events to get started with your own online
outreach plan. **
Weeding in the Garden of Good & Evil - Oct. 7th (Greenwich PL)
This hands-on workshop will give you the tools and enthusiasm that you
will need to assess your collection and make decisions on what material
needs to be weeded out of it. Our approach to weeding is that it isn?t
the irresponsible disposal of the library?s property, but rather a
part of the public service to borrowers, that of maintaining the best
possible collection for the community. The workshop will cover: purpose
of weeding, criteria for weeding decisions, mechanics of weeding,
developing a weeding policy and more.
Introduction to Camtasia 6 - Oct. 9th (MLSC)
Are you interested in learning how to create screencasts? Never heard
of screencasts? Then this full-day workshop is for you. We will learn
how to create online screencasts using Camtasia Studio 6, a powerful,
easy-to-use video screen recording program. Workshop participants will
learn how to record, produce, edit and publish practical screencasts and
take away the knowledge to do many more. You will be provided with
step-by-step procedures to get the most from your screencasts, and a
list of resources for further learning.
**Please bring a flash/usb/thumb drive with you for the workshop. This
will allow you to save your class work.**
Accidental Copy Cataloger : Basic Copy Cataloging Using OCLC - Oct.
16th (MLSC)
Did you inherit the cataloging work with little or no training? If so,
this one-day, workshop is for you. We will look at what you need to do
to catalog new items, how to do it, and why what you do and how you do
it matters. This class focuses on handling the large percentage of
incoming materials that will have existing "copy" (MARC records) in OCLC
that you can use for your cataloging. There will be plenty of time for
discussion, examples, and questions.
*Please bring along your cataloging questions and/or materials you find
challenging*
Introduction to Publisher 2007 - Oct. 23rd (MLSC)
This hands-on training session will introduce basic desktop publishing
techniques to the new Publisher 2007 user, but will also appeal to the
more experienced user. We will be examining the set-up of the program
and its use of templates. We will focus on the toolbar and the hidden
controls for tools. Ample time will be given to individual questions.
Bring work material and you should have time to get started on your
project.
Word 2007: Beyond the Basics - Oct. 27th (Bristol PL)
Now that you know how to type, select and format text, you're ready to
move on to more sophisticated documents. We'll explore the mystery of
tabs, including the popular tab leaders (dotted or solid lines going
across a page). We'll also find out how to insert, format and add
formulas to tables. We'll explore the table toolbar and investigate some
of its powerful features. We'll also be using a form toolbar to create
easy to use forms in Word 2007. Lastly, we'll have some fun inserting
graphics and borders into your document.
Free iCONN Webinar: PowerSearch 2.0 - Oct. 29th (ONLINE)
Curious about Gale's PowerSearch 2.0? Want to hear about your new
resources from Gale? Join us for an online webinar on October 29th at

Accidental Original Cataloger : Description & Access Basics - Oct. 30th
(MLSC)
Did everyone else leave, and now you are the cataloger? If so, this
workshop for you! It will help you learn how to "start from scratch" and
provide descriptive cataloging and access points for your original
record, according to the cataloging standard AACR2 Revised. The emphasis
is on books but principles for describing other types of materials will
also be discussed. General rules for constructing headings are covered
but complex situations and headings are not addressed. There will be
plenty of time for discussion, questions, and examples.
*Please bring along your cataloging questions and/or materials you find
challenging*

Middlesex Community College's Jean Burr Smith Library and the Russell
Library invite you to travel back to the 1930s when our country and
state were struggling to pull out of a depression and get people back to
work. "Soul of a People" is a series of library programs about the
Federal Writers' Project , a small Works Progress Administration
endeavor that created an enormous cultural legacy for the nation.
The WPA Writers' Project created the famous "American Guide Series" of
travel guides for every state. Writers interviewed former slaves and
recorded the life histories of thousands of ordinary Americans in small
towns and large cities across the U.S. Many writers who worked for the
WPA became prominent literary figures later in the century, among them
Richard Wright, Zora Neale Hurston, Saul Bellow and Eudora Welty.
Events include a 1930s live radio show, oral histories from the 1930s, a
broadcast of excerpts from the "Soul of a People" documentary, and a
book discussion of Zora Neale Hurtson's "Their Eyes Were Watching God".
All events are free and open to the public, and event locations are
handicapped accessible.

Booklet from NY

Hello All,
So far, we spray Lysol ABOVE our terminals at night as we close. We wipe the phones. We wash our (now) limited toys weekly --soap and water -- and let parents choose if they want wipes or not.One parent requested them, but the child was trying to put them in her mouth. I use gloves for emptying the bookdrop, if I have a cut on my hand, etc.
We are pretty much moving in parallel with the early stages of the NY booklet.... Thinking about more room between public terminals and moving reference staff closer to the main office.
I appreciated the booklet!
Best,
Eileen Branciforte

We have also been discussing this but there were some concerns raised about the appropriateness of some of these products in situations where young children could transfer the substance to their mouths. So I would be interested to see what products others are using.

Hi!
Came across a great link thru the ALA List ? Prtalk concerning how libraries should
plan for H1N1 Swine Flu:
http://www.nysl.nysed.gov/libdev/libs/h1n1flu.pdf
It?s from the NY State Library.
Is there a similar publication put out by any group in CT???
In the NY booklet it talks about cleaning down the keyboards of your internet terminals.
How often does your library do this? Every morning before opening?? What do you use?
I know you couldn?t do after every patron use.

Hi Peggy. The easy answer is, kinda. Yes the girl listed in the article was arrested for her involvement; however, she is neither of the girls who took your wallet and made the purchases.
I'm sure it has circled that the librarian in Fairfield, as a result of all of your teamwork and emails, was able to latch on to one of these girls as they attempted this in her library. Unfotunately, the female gave a false name, but a legit phone number. So amongst the legit info we had, Deisha Bennett's name came up and she was the one we latched onto. Middlebury was the one who actually served the arrest warrant for their town. I went down and assisted in making the arrest and also to see if we could get any intel. Unfortunately in NY, a right to counsel is automatically invoked when you are arrested on a warrant, so we could not talk to her, but she was nice enough to provide names and phone numbers for the two females involved in our case, how legit these are, I am still running it down. I'm working on tracking them down first using their cell phones and hopefully backtracking the phones will show that the calls hit off towers in the area where your wallet was taken and the purchases were made.
That is where our case stands now, but know that you are not alone. We have up to date 26 police departments involved with a rough total of about $100K. The FBI is also possibly getting involved due to the high amount of money. Deisha will hopefully be extradited to CT in the next coming weeks and I have high hopes of interviewing her and getting more info. I will keep you posted if aything else comes to light. Sorry I was late in informing you of this, but I was hoping to have something more substantial.
Thanks,

Topics covered:
How do I know which one to use?
What's in there for my patrons?
Are they really that hard to search?
If you are curious about a particular federal or state agency, just
email Nancy (npeluso@cslib.org) with the subject line ?Fed/CT Agency

Tue. Sept. 15th at the Gunn Memorial Library and Museum
Message-ID: <248145.19742.qm@web80505.mail.mud.yahoo.com>
Join us for a free scrapbook preservation workshop from 12:00pm-3:00pm on Tuesday September 15, 2009 in the Wykeham Room of the Gunn Memorial Library. Deb Wender, a national expert from Northeast Document Conservation Center in Massachusetts , will be teaching participants how to care for their old scrapbooks so that they?ll survive for future generations. Scrapbooks present some of the most complex conservation and reformatting challenges. Composed on varying materials, adhered with problematic glues and tapes to often acidic pages, scrapbooks frequently need to be reformatted in order to preserve the intellectual information contained within. This workshop is free and open to the public, as well as library and museum professionals interested in preservation options for scrapbooks. Participants are encouraged to bring a scrapbook from their collection for hands-on examination and discussion. Visitors will also be able to view the exhibition, The
Keepers of History: Scrapbooks and Albums, which includes many scrapbooks featured in Jessica Helfand?s new book, Scrapbooks: An American History, on display next door at the Gunn Museum. Space is limited, call 860-868-7756 to register. This exhibit and workshop are being sponsored by The Community Foundation of Northwest Connecticut, in collaboration with the Connecticut Humanities Council.
Deborah Wender has worked in the field of book conservation since 1979. Her varied education includes study at Centro del bel Libro in Switzerland , private and group study in the U.S. , and production in a commercial bindery. She is a member of AIC, the Guild of Book Workers, ALA , and SAA.
This event is free and open to the public. The Gunn Memorial Library and Museum is located at 5 Wykeham Road , at the intersection of Route 47 and Wykeham Road on Washington Green. For more information call 860-868-7756 or view www.gunnlibrary.org

What are the top 5 book titles that are stolen from your library? You know,
the ones that can never stay on the shelf or continually get put into "lost"
status. Send me a message offlist and I'll compile the results and send them
around. Curious to see if the same materials are being ripped off across the
state.

connecting with their users online.
Introduction to Camtasia Studio 6 - Oct.
Federal & State Agency Information on the Internet - Oct. 14th (MLSC)
Federal and Connecticut Agency web sites are a rich, accurate and
timely resource for librarians. They can provide a great source of
up-to-date information and supplement your existing library collections.
In this hands-on workshop we will explore numerous federal and state
agency web sites that can help you answer those tough reference
questions. Topics covered: How do I know which one to use?, What's in
there for my patrons?, Are they really that hard to search?
Accidental Copy Cataloger - Oct. 16th (MLSC)
Did you inherit the cataloging work with little or no training? Is
there no one is available to help you or answer your questions? If so,
this one-day, hands-on course is for you. We will look at what you need
to do to catalog the new items coming into your library, how to do it,
and why what you do and how you do it matters. This class focuses on
handling the very large percentage of incoming materials that will have
existing "copy" (MARC records) in OCLC that you can use for your
cataloging. There will be plenty of time for discussion, examples, and
questions.
CSL Webinar: Ccar Volumn Survey - Oct. 22nd (ONLINE)
Understanding Connecticar (Ccar) volume helps the Connecticut State
Library improve delivery service. In order to best estimate Ccar volume,
the Connecticut State Library is asking libraries that get Ccar service
to count the items they receive via Ccar during the week of October 26.
In this online session, Sharon Brettschneider will review the procedures
and answer any questions that you have concerning the survey.
Word 2007 Beyond the Basics - Oct.
Join us for an online webinar on October 29th at
10:00 a.m. Stacey Knibloe, Senior Training Consultant for Gale, will be
providing training on this new and exciting feature for Connecticut
librarians.
Accidental Original Cataloger - Oct. 30th (MLSC)
Did everyone else leave, and now you are the cataloger? If so, this
one-day course is for you! It will help you learn how to "start from
scratch" and provide descriptive cataloging and access points for your
original record, according to the cataloging standard AACR2 Revised. The
course also covers how to create original records using OCLC Connexion.
The emphasis is on books but principles for describing other types of
materials will also be discussed. General rules for constructing
headings are covered but complex situations and headings are not
addressed. There will be plenty of time for discussion, questions, and
examples.

I am pleased to announce that, as promised, there is now an active "Ask A Librarian" link on all iCONN Gale database search screens. When users click on that link, they will see the "Please Select your Library" drop-down menu that will include only 2 choices: iCONN or Spanish Program.
We hope that by providing this additional access point to the InfoAnytime service, more users will know it exists and be able to benefit from it.

Middlesex Community College
Middletown, CT.
The Friends of Connecticut Libraries are pleased to invite the FOCL
membership to a free Fall workshop held at Middlesex Community College
in Middletown. We believe the topics are timely, stimulating and
useful.
We hope each Friends group can be represented.
AGENDA

9:00 a.m. Welcome
9:10 a.m. ?The Next Generation of Friends: Help is On the
Way!?
Timothy Cole, PhD, a non-profit consultant (West Wind Consulting),
specializing in planning and development, will lead the audience in
discussion on who are the Friends volunteers of the future. Younger
generations have different views as to community, libraries and
volunteering. Should Friends change their current mode of operation to
attract future generations? What type of change works? Good questions;
let?s talk about them.
Timothy Cole also specializes in building successful cross sector
partnerships. Tim builds upon his decades of professional and
educational experience, together with years of volunteer service to
help
non-profits achieve their goals. He?s worked in the fields of
economic
development, grant writing and fundraising in the United States and
Europe.
10:30 to 10:45 a.m. Break and Reconfigure Room into Two Workshops
10:45 a.m. ?Things Your Treasurer Should Know?
Being Treasurer of a Friends group is lot more than cashing membership
checks and paying bills. Patricia ?Patty? J. Foley, C.P.A. will
discuss topics like recording keeping, internal vs. external financial
reports. Employer policies, tax issues, budget and investing and
various
financial policies. The program is recommended for Friends officers
and
newly minted treasurers.
Our speaker is Patty Foley who was a 2008 recipient of the FOCL
Individual Achievement Award for her commitment to the Lucy Robbins
Welles Library in Newington, CT. She has used her professional
accounting and business skills to put her Friends group in a firm
financial position that serves them well in all endeavors. Patty has
held nearly all of the officer and chair positions for her Friends
groups and brings a wealth of knowledge and real world experience
regarding Friends financial management.
10:45 a.m. ?How Used Books Sales are Conducted in CT?
The workshop will address the questions you asked when you returned
the
survey with your memberships renewal forms. Used book sales always
promote a lively discussion with ideas you can take home to your group
to make a more profitable sale. The awaited result of used book sale
survey analysis is complete. Our own Carl Nawrocki, president of FOCL,
will present the results as book prices, bag sales, number of books
and
disposal methods.
Carl Nawrocki is the current president of FOCL and has served as
president of the Friends of Salem Library for over 18 years. He has
participated in the Salem Friends used book sale for nearly 20 years.

Message-ID:
Hello,
Can you tell me if you do podcasting at your library for your website what
software and types of equipment (even brands) you use? We are just getting
started with podcasting, and with some experimentation, find that we need to
upgrade our microphone and other equipment. Dreamweaver 8 doesn't seem to
lend itself to podcasting, so we're turning to free software such as
Audacity, or uploading filmed events to our blog. Do you do both video and
audio, or just audio? Your suggestions and comments will be appreciated!
Westport Library staff has already been very helpful! Thank you.

Conference in Hartford, CT on October 18 - 20, 2009.
Why? Just take a look at the great program lineup at
www.nelib.org/conference to see the details on this dynamic
educational event and networking opportunity. This is the first time in
recent memory that NELA has been in Hartford and we're hoping that lots
of CT librarians take advantage of the opportunity to attend outstanding
programs and meet librarians from the rest of the New England States.
Some of the conference highlights are:
Dr. Camila Alire, ALA President-Elect, will be joining us. She will be
leading a special ALA Forum on Sunday, October 18. Share your thoughts
on how ALA should focus its efforts in the next five years. As her
presidential initiatives, Dr. Alire will also be sharing her expertise
and innovative ideas about Library Advocacy and Literacy in a
presentation on Monday, October 19.
At the annual banquet Will Manley, author, columnist and retired
librarian, offers a therapy session for us to make fun of the outside
world, and our patrons certainly give us much to laugh about. In
addition to speaking at the banquet, he will present at programs on
Monday and Tuesday. There's an opportunity to hear him every day of the
conference.
Connecticut's own Kendall Wiggin will receive The Emerson Greenaway
Award at the annual banquet.
Check out Time to go FISHing! - During this time of cutbacks and
economic hardship it is especially important to keep our customers
happy. First see the FISH! Philosophy video, based on Seattle?s famed
Pike Place Fish Market customer service methods. Then Mark Willis,
Community Relations Manager for the Dayton (OH) Metro Library and author
of Dealing with Difficult People in the Library, describes simple ways
to make improving service fun.
These are just a few of the outstanding program that you'll have the
opportunity to attend. Take a look at the detailed program at
www.nelib.org/conference .
So, register now! Both the Early Bird registration discount and the
special NELA rate at the Marriott hotel are good until October 9. Take
advantage of the savings by registering now. www.nelib.org/conference

Everyone:
iCONN is pleased to announce that a link to the London Times newspaper is now present among other newspapers in all our menus. This resource is from Gale Cengage and features full text coverage from July 1, 1985 to the present. As a Gale resource, the London Times is also searched by default in Power Search, iCONN"s master index to all Gale content. A direct link to the London Times is available in the links documents at http://www.iconn.org/staff/urltable.aspx. I am pleased to answer any questions about this.

Subject: [Conntech] Important Budget News!!
Message-ID: <4ABBA3D9020000D70002264B@ns2.cslib.org>
Important Budget News
As you know PA 9-03 restored full appropriations for all library
programs. Unfortunately, we have just learned that built into the
overall state budget were bottom line adjustments to General Fund
appropriations of over $473 million which will result in a significant
number of adjustments to agency-specific appropriations. Further
information about these reductions may be found on the OPM website at:
http://www.ct.gov/opm/cwp/view.asp?a=2961&Q=447290&PM=1
Please see Secretary Genuario?s September 17th letter. For the most
part, and to extent possible, the Office of Policy and Management
primarily based the holdbacks on historical spending patterns in various
accounts.
What does this mean for libraries? Other than the state aid and Ccard
budget lines, all other lines are being subjected to a significant
?holdback.? These are not technically reductions in appropriations
but we will not be given these amounts in our allocation.
These holdbacks are:
iCONN, reduction of $461,722 from $1,968,794 to $1,507,072
reQuest, reduction of $181,437 from $674,696 to $493,259
CLC, reduction of $84,389 from $350,000 to $265,611
InfoAnytime, reduction of $36,167 from $42,500 to $6,333
Ccar, reduction of $2,734 from $266,434 to $263,700
CSL Personnel reduced by $784,504 from $6,261,095 to $5,476,591 (most of
this reflects reductions because of early retirements)
CSL materials reduced by $151,488 from $1,140,000 to $988,512
CSL Other Expenses reduced by $161,451 from $807,045 to $645,594
State Aid and Connecticard reimbursements were not affected.
Due to these holdbacks we must reduce current expenses in iCONN by
cutting some of the databases. We will hope that some money may be
given back at the end of the year but cannot take the chance that this
will happen. It will be necessary to cut the following databases from
iCONN.
For Academic libraries:
CINAHL Full-text (CINAHL indexing will remain)
Campus Research
For all libraries:
AP Images
Boston Globe
The priorities for elimination are in keeping with the priorities
discussed with CCALD and the iCONN Database Committee. These databases
will be eliminated as of October 1st.
Our apologies for the short notice. We just learned of this issue
yesterday.
We are examining options in our other budget lines and will let you know
if any service will be affected. For right now there will be no changes
in the reQuest service.

Subject: [Conntech] Bibliomation Evergreen Project Announcement
Message-ID:
On September 24th the Bibliomation Board of Directors voted to accept a
staff recommendation to establish the Evergreen Open Source Software system
as the future migration path for the network. This recommendation was based
on fifteen months of investigation. The Bibliomation staff download both the
Evergreen and Koha Open Source Software products, loaded identical sets of
test records on both systems, then evaluated the two products against over
120 separate functional requirements. This testing provided conclusive
evidence that the Evergreen option is the more consortia friendly of the
Open Source alternatives currently available.
This decision does not imply an imminent system migration for Bibliomation.
There are still a number of enhancements to the Evergreen Software that we
feel will be necessary before such a migration is feasible. We will,
however, move ahead with the Bibliomation Developmental Partners Project.
Four small public libraries have volunteered to work with the network in a
pilot project which will allow us to implement and test new enhancements to
the Evergreen software. Bibliomation will migrate each of these libraries
into a small, fully functional shared Evergreen system, which will, in turn
act as a test bed for the software improvements as they are developed. In
return for their cooperation in this project Bibliomation has created a very
favorable cost structure that will fully reflect the potential financial
savings Open Source has to offer libraries.
The four libraries that have agreed to participate in this project are: The
Beacon Falls Public Library, The Douglas Library Association of Hebron, The
Slater Library in Griswold, and the Windham Free Library Association. We
will be scheduling profiling meetings with these libraries in October and
hope to have a functioning shared Evergreen cooperative system operational
in Connecticut by early 2010.

The Reference Interview - Oct. 2nd (WLSC)
One of the basic services of the library is the delivery of information during what is commonly referred to as the reference interview. This program will examine the role of the reference interview, the components that make up the reference interview, and offer strategies for improving results. You will learn about: librarian patron relationships, importance of determining wants vs. needs, impedimets to success, impossible questions and more.
Dreamweaver CS3 Pt.1 & Pt.2 - Oct.5th & Oct.7th (Darien PL)
Dramweaver CS3 is a powerful web design software that allows beginners to create professional looking web sites. This two- day workshop is intended to be taken in order. Topics covered include: setting up a website, basic editing, creating links and graphics, using tables and templates and much, much more.
Online Outreach & Marketing - Oct. 6th (Darien PL)
n the Web 2.0 environment, libraries need to learn to reach beyond traditional ideas of outreach and take advantage of new tools for connecting with their users online. During this full day workshop we'll discuss a variety of ideas for libraries to get information out into spaces beyond their library web sites and to connect with their users on their own online turf. We'll look at community events calendars, monitoring local blogs and other forums, social review sites and much more.
**This is a hands-on session, so come prepared with information about your library, services and events to get started with your own online outreach plan. **
Introduction to Camtasia Studio 6 - Oct. 9th (MLSC)
Are you interested in learning how to create screencasts? Never heard of screencasts? Then this full-day workshop is for you. We will learn how to create online screencasts using Camtasia Studio 6, a powerful, easy-to-use video screen recording program. Workshop participants will learn how to record, produce, edit and publish practical screencasts and take away the knowledge to do many more. You will be provided with step-by-step procedures to get the most from your screencasts, and a list of resources for further learning.
CSL Webinar: Ccar Volumn Survey - Oct. 22nd (ONLINE)
Understanding Connecticar (Ccar) volume helps the Connecticut State Library improve delivery service. In order to best estimate Ccar volume, the Connecticut State Library is asking libraries that get Ccar service to count the items they receive via Ccar during the week of October 26. In this online session, Sharon Brettschneider will review the procedures and answer any questions that you have concerning the survey.
Word 2007 Beyond the Basics - Oct. 27th (Bristol PL)
Now that you know how to type, select and format text, you're ready to move on to more sophisticated documents. We'll explore the mystery of tabs, including the popular tab leaders (dotted or solid lines going across a page). We'll also find out how to insert, format and add formulas to tables. We'll explore the table toolbar and investigate some of its powerful features. We'll also be using a form toolbar to create easy to use forms in Word 2007. Lastly, we'll have some fun inserting graphics and borders into your document.

Message-ID:
To the Connecticut Library Community:
CLC's support for InfoAnytime is cancelled THIS Wednesday, September 30, due
to the devastating news just announced about severe budget "holdbacks" in
this fiscal year (July 1, 2009-June 30, 2010).
$84,389 is gone from CLC's state grant of $350,000, and $36,167 is gone from
InfoAnytime, leaving only $6333.
I would have liked to give the library community more notice, but the cost
of extending InfoAnytime for one extra month would be $4175 (in addition to
the $12,500 we have already paid for the quarter ending September 30, 2009).
CLC just doesn't have the money. We will be notifying directly the 133
public libraries and 28 academic libraries and ICONN, who offer a gateway to
InfoAnytime on their websites.
I have enjoyed working with all of you and all the staff at Tutor.com. It is
with great regret that I announce the end CLC's support for InfoAnytime.

Friends and Colleagues:
Carl Antonucci of Capital Community College and Sandy Long of Madison Public
Lbirary have come up with some ideas for saving InfoAnytime. Carl is calling
Tutor.com and OCLC's competing virtual reference provider QuestionPoint to
talk about pricing. Sandy suggests CLC's managing cost sharing among the
libraries who are now participating (162 participants and $36,167 cost =
$223.25 each, added to payments already made.)
The purpose of this note is to see which libraries would still be interested
with a cost sharing model; then we will let both vendors know. If you are
interested in paying to continue InfoAnytime with a volunteer committee,
please respond to Carl and Sandy, and copy Deb Zulick at CLC. We librarians
are nothing if not resourceful, so who knows, this just might work! We'll
keep you posted.

Two free Library Journal webcasts will be offered in October 2009.
Complete description and registration information below
Webcast: Stretch Your Large Print Budget with Smart Collection
Development: Best Practices from the Pros - Oct. 15th @ 2:00 p.m.
(ONLINE)
Every library has its own philosophy and policies governing collection
development and management. One important part of the library?s
service to its community is the large print collection which many
patrons depend on for both entertainment and information. Recognizing
that there is as much art as there is science in the selection process,
there are guidelines and best practices that can help maximize the
dollars in your large print book budget and promote circulation of these
materials. With more baby boomers than ever using public libraries,
circulation of large print materials is expected to increase as well.
Webcast panelists from three very different libraries will discuss how
they have refined their large print selection and collection management
processes to maximize their investment in Large Print. Join us to hear
how these professionals? philosophies on building a robust Large Print
Collection helps them meet the needs of their customers, internal and
external.
Additionally we?ll explore which authors, series and genre are most
in demand by patrons, get tips on supplementing the core Large Print
collection, and find out what kind of marketing is being done to draw
attention to Large Print collections. Finally, we?ve asked the
panelists to pull out their crystal balls and speculate on the state of
their Large Print collections in three years - which should lead to a
lively question and answer session following the panelists?

Webcast: Doing More with Less: ?Training Up? in Tough Economic
Times - Oct. 20th @ 2:00 p.m. (ONLINE)
Gate counts keep going up, but staff levels are not. Patrons?
technological needs are increasing as many have lost their jobs and
access to computers at the same time. Older patrons with little computer
experience are finding that many insurance and financial forms need to
be completed online. Is your staff ready to serve?
Library employee training budgets aren?t exactly getting fatter
either, often forcing staff to just learn on the job or stagnate. And
what about new hires? Are they expected to have already learned about
your library?s technology as part of their education?
A group of training experts will discuss how ?training up? library
staff can help stretch and boost the level of technological customer
service your library can offer to patrons, and to the library itself.
The webcast will also cover Web 2.0 tools and applications that make
training sessions, documents and support readily accessible and
available on-demand, 24/7. From academe, we?ll hear how one library
school program is preparing its students for high touch high tech
careers in our public, school, special and academic libraries.

Subject: Recent "holdbacks" to Library Programs
As you know, because of state budget "holdbacks" - the following
library services will be cut - CLC - reduction of $84,389 from $350,000
to $265,611 - InfoAnyTime is cancelled as of today - The State Library
will cut CINAHL Full-Text, Campus Research, AP Images and the Boston
Globe on October 1st. Please join us again as we fight to save what has
been cut.
CLA Lobbyist Bobby Shea has advised us to email Governor Rell, Lt.

the "holdbacks" to our programs.

Hi Everyone,
I just joined the Cheshire Chamber Women in Business. They are anxious
to find speakers on several topics. The most interest was in Starting
and managing global networks and social media especially for their
business. They were also interested in certain protocols such as keeping
your personal facebook separate from a business facebook.
So , please let me know if you have had an outstanding presenter on the
above topic.
Many thanks,
Sue Hartley
