Advanced Book Repair: Hardcover Techniques - Feb. 26th (MLSC) Would you like to save money by getting more uses per book? Have you already done all the easy repairs and have a shelf left over of difficult broken spines on hardcover books? Do you have staff time to do repair work, rather than budget money to replace or rebind books? This workshop is appropriate for a library staff member or volunteer who has done basic book repair or taken a basic book repair workshop and is ready to try some advanced repair techniques. Emphasis will be on spine repairs for hardcover books, where professional rebinding is not an option due to brittle paper, or lack of access to a bindery or the funds to pay for rebinding. The purpose is on getting books back into circulation, rather than on archival or long-term preservation techniques, although conservation-friendly reversible repair techniques will be the focus. **HANDS-ON: ONE BOOK WILL BE PROVIDED TO EACH PARTICIPANT FOR PRACTICE REPAIRS - YOU MAY BRING ADDITIONAL DISCARDED BOOKS TO WORK ON THAT ARE NOT VALUABLE (Hardcover repair workshop books may not be suitable for returning to a library collection - it takes some practice!). Some supplies will be available for sharing. Optionally, you may also bring your own book repair tools to work with, such as scissors, box cutter or Xacto knife, ruler, bone folder, glue stick, and/or glue brush. The best feature is its ease of use and responsive tech support department. CASSIE is easy to install and easy to use, for both staff and public. Most common tasks are simple and intuitive, meaning little training for staff or public. The software is very stable, but the few times I've needed to call tech support, they've not only solved my problem but been able to explain what went wrong and why. A big confidence booster! Also, despite the SIP2 connection being broken when your ILS is down, CASSIE continues to function. New users cannot be imported from the ILS, obviously, nor will dynamic blocking based on status work, but existing users can still sign in and pay for prints from their deposit account. Coming up with the worst features has been hard, since I love the product, but here's a few. You can't do print cost recovery on a PC that patrons don't sign in to use (like an OPAC) without pushing the jobs to print release station. There isn't an easy way to see how much time a patron has used so far that day. And we occassionally have a problem with the print function just disappearing from a PC--a reboot usually solves that. (And yes, their responsive tech support explained to me why this happens--I have just been unable to resolve the issue on every PC.) I hope this helps. Feel free to contact me directly if you want more information about how we are using CASSIE here at West Hartford. We have had wonderful success with Cassie and use their SPOT server technology for wireless users to be able to print to our printer.  Again hard to find negatives, but I find the reservation system clunky, we do not have the problem as our supply usually beats our demand. this may also be a "user" trying to describe a capability that is there, but do not have it turned on. Glenn may be able to speak to that. We do not use a separate PC for our patrons to reserve, we have to do it at the desk. Jean Baldwin, Guilford Free Library?s second Director, died peacefully in Vermont, Monday, January 4, 2010. She was ninety. Jean joined the staff of the GFL in 1961 as the Associate Librarian (Assistant Director). She worked closely with Director Edith Nettleton until Edith?s retirement in 1978, when Jean was appointed Director, serving from 1978 until 1987. Jean and Edith worked long and hard to achieve the first addition to the library, which expanded the building from the original 5,000 square feet to 20,000 square feet. In the early 1980s Jean pushed the library into the beginnings of technological development. Under her guidance the library became an early member of Libraries Online Inc., with automated online circulation initiated in 1987, making the GFL an ?early adopter.? Jean fought long and hard for salary equity for the GFL staff and was influential in bringing in an outside firm to evaluate positions. Jean was witty, feisty, and always inquisitive. She contributed greatly to the development of the library and securing the respect of the community. During the late 50s and early 60s Jean was an influential volunteer in establishing school libraries in the three existing elementary schools and one middle school. Prior to her involvement there had been no school libraries. Information regarding memorial services and/or gifts is not available at this time. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... We are planning to add some new questions and change some others. Rather than surprise you with these changes in the fall, I am listing the trickier questions below. If you have comments or dire warnings please let me know. Thanks. General Information If you are using an Integrated Library System (an automated system for catalog, circulation, etc.), what is its name? This workshop is appropriate for a library staff member or volunteer who will be doing book repair. Emphasis will be on simple repairs for the everyday public or school library collection, rather than on archival or long-term preservation techniques. Though the emphasis in this workshop will be on teaching technology many of the concepts can be used to teach other skills. Topics include: Organizing the information, conducting the class, preparing presentation materials, encouraging participation, creating handouts and more. April 19 & 20, 2010 Mohegan Sun, Uncasville >From a baby at a lapsit program in a public library, to a student in a school library, on to the academic library of higher education, and then back to the public library as an adult bringing their own children to lapsit, the library is a constant in our lives. Through this time of economic turmoil and uncertain budgets, librarians have worked together to preserve the tools required to provide information to all patrons. This time of collaboration is a unifying experience and we hope that librarians will continue to work together, across the boundaries of public, school, special and academic, to reach as many as possible. We seek to minimize our differences and celebrate our common ground! We all know that in dark economic times, more and more people turn to our institutions for help and entertainment, but it's not always clear how we can best help them and ourselves when we have seemingly fewer resources with which to do so. This series of short presentations will hopefully help you brainstorm some creative ways you can add value to the services you provide, without adding more stress to your budget! Part 1: Helping Your Patrons Help Themselves -- This hour long talk will explore a few ways you can help members of your community who find themselves out of work or just looking to better their financial situation. We'll briefly discuss programming possibilities, a few free technologies that can be of great benefit to job-seekers, and some smart ways to supplement cash flow and manage money. The house belonged to Tom and Mary Anne Ainsworth, both Town of Tolland employees for over 20 years. Mary Anne is the Reference/Adult Services Librarian at the Tolland Public Library. My Board of Trustees is getting ready to argue for an end to the following Town Hall policy.  Whenever patrons pay for collection items that they have damaged or lost, Town Hall requires us to turn the money over to them.  We are not allowed to keep it to replace the items or to purchase equivalents -- Town Hall says this income is rightfully theirs because it "helps to offset the cost of running the library".  Making matters worse, until recently, whenever patrons found lost items and returned them for refunds, Town Hall paid the refunds out of our materials budget.  This finally caused the Library Board to adopt a "no refunds" policy last fall, but the trustees now want to object to the whole process, which we think is unfair. When patrons pay for lost or damaged collection items in your libraries, do you get to keep the money?  Or, like us, do you have to forfeit it to Town Hall?  Before my Board takes on this fight, we want to confirm that this isn't a widespread practice. Please reply off-list, and many thanks for your help. There are some minor changes. Due to the state budget cutbacks, the Profile will NOT be printed and mailed to libraries this year. If you wish to print a copy of the Profile, the PDF version will be easier to print. The Profile is 192 pages long. New Features for 2009: 1. The Profile sorts libraries in alphabetical order. By using the drop-down sort & filter feature of the Excel version, however, you may sort or filter any of the worksheets by population, AENGLC (wealth) ranking, or any of the variables available on the worksheet. This may be useful for comparison purposes. 2. In addition, we have provided a version of the Profile that breaks the libraries into specific populations groups, providing averages for each group. 3. By the close of the workshop, you will have a rough square-footage figure for your library's needs. All workshop participants will go home with an Excel version of the spreadsheet. (You do not need to know Excel.) The workshop will take you step-by-step through the Library Space Planning Guide, a State Library Publication. The Guide is geared to public libraries; however, school and academic libraries can also use some of the information. Note to distressed municipalities planning to apply for construction grants: The state bonding allocations for FY 10 and FY 11 for the State Public Library Construction Grants are 0. Since we have $5,250,278 carryover funds for distressed municipalities (Ansonia, Bridgeport, Bristol, Brooklyn, Derby, East Hartford, Hartford, Killingly, Meriden, Naugatuck, New Britain, New Haven, New London, North Canaan, Norwich, Plainfield, Plymouth, Putnam, Sprague, Torrington, Vernon, Waterbury, West Haven, Winchester, Windham), but no carryover funds for nondistressed municipalities, we are only accepting applications from distressed municipalities this year. If you plan to apply for a construction grant for an addition, renovation, or new construction, you should have completed the Library Space Planning Guide work sections before attending the construction grant workshop on April 28, 2010 at Middletown Library Service Center. For maximum benefit bring these figures with you to the workshop: - Current book and nonprint holdings - Annual average of net additions (items added minus items withdrawn) for books and nonprint using data for the last five years for each collection - Number of current periodical titles displayed now, or estimate the number for the year 2030 - Number of back periodicals stored To save your library space planning worksheet bring a thumb/flash drive to save your work or if your e-mail allows, you can e-mail to yourself. At 36 she had a marriage that worked; a couple of funny, active kids; and a weekly newspaper column -- and all the while felt as though she remained confortably wedged between her adult duties and her parents' care. A natural storyteller, Corrigan caputres the beat of ordinary life and the everyday moments that bind families together. The Middle Place held a 24-week spot on The New York Times best seller list. That project is designed to establish a small, functioning Evergreen network in the state to serve as a pilot project for Open Source Integrated Library System implementations, and more specifically as a test site for Bibliomation's own eventual migration to Evergreen. The first library to take advantage of this expansion is the Jonathan Trumbull Library in Lebanon Connecticut. The will be joining the Beacon Falls Public Library, The Douglas Library Association in Hebron, The Slater Library in Griswold, and the Windham Free Library Association in a shared Evergreen implementation. Last month I invited you to participate in one of the five focus groups we will be holding in January and February; one each for school and academic librarians and three for public librarians. There are openings in all the focus groups but we'd be particularly interested in having a few more attend the school library focus group at Loomis Chaffee and the public library focus groups in South Windsor and Trumbull. We would very much appreciate hearing the thoughts and concerns of the library community as we deliberate our future and welcome those interested to attend one of these sessions. The dates and times are listed below. To sign up for a session please do so through our CE calendar at: http://evanced.info/cslib/evanced/eventcalendar.asp Thank you very much for assisting us with our planning. To register access the Continuing Education Calendar of Events @ http://evanced.info/cslib/evanced/eventcalendar.asp Introduction to Camtasia Studio 6 - Mar. 10th (MLSC) Are you interested in learning how to create screencasts? Never heard of screencasts? Then this full-day workshop is for you. We will learn how to create online screencasts using Camtasia Studio 6, a powerful, easy-to-use video screen recording program. Workshop participants will learn how to record, produce, edit and publish practical screencasts and take away the knowledge to do many more. You will be provided with step-by-step procedures to get the most from your screencasts, and a list of resources for further learning. You will have time during the day to work on a real project so come prepared with some ideas. **Please bring a flash/usb/thumb drive with you for the workshop. This will allow you to save your class work.** RSS in Libraries - Mar. 11th (MLSC) RSS feeds are everywhere these days - on news web sites, blogs, social networking sites, databases and if you're lucky, in your library catalog. But what does this really mean and how do we take advantage of this magic technology? In this class we'll explore how RSS can help you gather information more efficiently. And how RSS can help your library distribute information. Topics covered in this fast-paced class will include: RSS basics, Using feed reader software (Google Reader), Tools that can distribute information via RSS (Delicious, twitter, etc) and Creating RSS feeds & tools to add to your web page Online Outreach & Marketing - Mar. 12th (Wilson Branch, NHFPL) In the Web 2.0 environment, libraries need to learn to reach beyond traditional ideas of outreach and take advantage of new tools for connecting with their users online. During this full day workshop we'll discuss a variety of ideas for libraries to get information out into spaces beyond their library web sites and to connect with their users on their own online turf. We'll look at community events calendars, monitoring local blogs and other forums, social review sites and much more. **This is a hands-on session, so come prepared with information about your library, services and events to get started with your own online outreach plan. ** Anatomy of a Web Page: Introduction to HTML - Mar. 12th (MLSC) Html, or Hypertext Markup language is the basis for all web sites. In this course we will take a look at the anatomy of a web page, the coding behind the scenes. You will learn basic HTML coding and build a web page from scratch. You will be able to use what you learn in this class to tweak pages created you've created with such software as Dreamweaver and Frontpage. This is an introductory course and you do not need to know any HTML to take this class. Digital Cameras: Start to Finish - Mar. 12th (MLSC) We will take you through the steps of taking pictures with your camera, downloading them to a computer, adjusting images in Photoshop Elements, then saving them to a disk. Along the way, we will explain how cameras work, the different file formats, and resolution. Bring your cameras, any user manuals, and any CDs that came with your camera. Dublin Core - Mar. 23rd (MLSC) Dublin Core (so named because it was developed in the town of Dublin, Ohio) is a metadata standard for describing digital objects. It is similar to MARC, but simpler, yet more conducive to describing audio, video and electronic resources. Dublin Core is the metadata most often used for digital repositories such as those at the American Geographical Society, Mystic Seaport, and C/W MARS. This half-day workshop is intended for people interested in participating in a digitization project. Please bring a photograph or document to describe. Essential Cataloging for Local History & Genealogy Collections - Mar. 23rd (MLSC) Local history and genealogy collections are special. Even though the cataloging rules are the same as for a library?s regular collection, there are additional considerations. The organization of the material and the classification scheme need to be re-evaluated in light of the unique needs of the customers using this collection as well as additional notes that a cataloger might not usually encounter. In this half day workshop we will examine a variety of published and unpublished items: books, pamphlets, manuscripts, scrapbooks and vertical files as well as photocopies and microfilm. *Recommended for : Copy catalogers and new catalogers who work with local history and genealogy collections. Word 2007: Making the Transition - Mar. 31st (WLSC) Have you been using Microsoft Word 2000 or 2003 and are thoroughly overwhelmed by the new interface of 2007? In this hands-on workshop, you will have to opportunity to explore Word 2007. Excel 2007: Making the Transition - Mar. 31st (WLSC) Have you been using Microsoft Excel 2000 or 2003 and are thoroughly overwhelmed by the new interface of 2007? In this hands-on workshop, you will have to opportunity to explore Excel 2007. I received 38 replies.  Twenty-six (26) libraries said they are allowed to keep lost item payments so as replace the item or something close to it.  Twelve (12) libraries are not -- their town/city halls take the money for the general fund.  So, Canton's policy is not exactly unheard of but, by a ratio of more than 2 to 1, the majority of libraries are allowed to keep lost and paid money. One library that had to turn the payments over to Town Hall noted that subsequent refunds were paid out of the town's general fund, not out of the library's budget.  (In Canton, we can't keep the lost payment and must replace it from the current year materials budget.  Then, if the patron returns the item within 90 days and asks for a refund, the refund is paid out of our current year materials budget.  We often got victimized three times for the same loss, so my trustees recently passed a "no refunds" policy.)  One library said it had to hand lost and paid money over to town hall, but then town hall funds an account within the library's operating budget specifically to pay for replacements. One library noted it turns lost and paid money over to town hall once per month.  A small amount is withheld to fund any possible refunds, however.  The system seems to work. >From the standpoint of the economy, one library pointed out that this is not a good time to ask our town hall to let us keep this income, which is probably true. Thank you all for your help.  My Library Board is preparing to meet with the Board of Selectmen to argue the unfairness of their practice and to ask if we can keep our lost and paid money.  I will mention to my trustees the timing issue (the economy being so bad), but I believe they will want to go ahead with it anyway.  They are really upset right now because we received refunds for two magazines we subscribed to but which went out-of-business.  We received refund checks on the balances of our subscriptions, but Town Hall took them as "miscellaneous income for the general fund".  This may have been the straw that broke the camel's back! PS: For those who suggested we ask the patron to replace the item (or something close to it) in lieu of a money payment, we have done that here.  We stress "like for like" -- a hardcover for a hardcover, a book on cd for a book on cd.  But still we have had problems with some patrons trying to give us something crummy for something they lost of ours that was good, so this is not a remedy we have pushed too hard.  If Town Hall stands firm, however, perhaps we will re-think this option. The charts use statistical measures such as circulation, library visits, income, expenses, collection size, programs, etc.. Use a chart-maker to compare your library to the state average and to a town population group average. Or you can use a chart-maker to compare your library to 4 other libraries of your choosing. Please call both of your Senators and ask them to write a letter to Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV), Senator Richard Durbin (D-IL), and Senator Byron Dorgan (D-ND), requesting that the hiring and retaining of librarians be included in the $18 billion as well. This bill could come up at any moment and it is critically important that you contact your Senators immediately and tell them to send this letter. Also, tell them what your library is doing to help people find jobs. We cannot let this legislation pass without the inclusion of libraries, and we have no chance of getting libraries into this legislation without your calls!! The funding is grants and loans. *This funding specifically set aside for rural libraries is a lifeline for communities across the country who depend on their local libraries for basic needs such as Internet access as well as assistance with e-government services, literacy and homework programs, and much more. We thank the USDA for its recognition of the vital role libraries play in rural communities and their need for funding.* Funds may be used to construct, enlarge or improve public libraries. This can include costs to acquire land needed for a facility, pay necessary professional fees and purchase equipment required for operation. Funds can be used to purchase shelving, furniture, computers, audio-visual equipment, distance learning equipment and bookmobiles. I am looking for a free, easy, and easily-editable way to create a map of our library. I would like to use this - in floorplan format - to help our shelvers. So not only would I like a way to lay out the sections, but also a way to label them (either directly, with the names of the sections, or with a key code of some kind; e.g. #1 for young adult fiction, etc.). Does anyone have experience doing this, and if so, what software did you use? I know there are free floorplan programs online - floorplanner.com and smartdraw.com - but I don't know how versatile they are (or if they're too detailed for what I need). In a nutshell, I'd like to avoid "real" pens and rulers. Any and all suggestions would be much appreciated! Please send them to me off-list (and I'm willing to share info, if anyone's interested.)
