The following Connecticut State Library continuing education workshops have been scheduled for May 2012. To register access the Connecticut Library Continuing Education Calendar of Events @ http://evanced.info/cslib/evanced/eventcalendar.asp

Introduction to Dublin Core - May 14th (MLSC)
Dublin Core (so named because it was developed in the town of Dublin, Ohio) is a metadata standard for describing digital objects. It is similar to AACR2 and MARC, but simpler, and it is more conducive to describing audio, video and electronic resources. Dublin Core is the metadata schema most often used for digital repositories such as those at the American Geographical Society, Mystic Seaport, and C/W MARS. This workshop is for people interested in creating metadata for a digitization project. Please bring a photograph or document to describe.

Cataloging Electronic Resources - May 14th (MLSC)
Libraries are so much more than books! Electronic Resources are becoming a larger and larger part of the collection as well as becoming more popular among patrons. The cataloging rules are actually the same as for books - but there are different aspects to consider. This workshop looks at how Playaways, eBooks, electronic versions of print books and web sites are cataloged using AACR2. It also introduces participants to the ways Resource Description and Access (RDA) - the new content standard to be adopted by the Library of Congress in March 2013 - is different from AACR2. Cataloging Consultant Dodie Gaudet helps to unravels the myriad options when cataloging these new media

Creating Effective Library Newsletters with Publisher - May 17th (WLSC)
Newsletters are a popular method to inform your community of the happenings at your library. In this day long workshop, we will discuss best design practices for printed newsletters, distribution options, and work with Microsoft Publisher to create a sample newsletter.

Prerequisite: You do not need prior experience with Publisher, though it is helpful. Familiarity with basic tools in Microsoft Word or other word processing software (Wordpad, Word Perfect, or Apple Works) is a must.

Connecticut State Agency Information on the Internet - May 22nd (MLSC)
Connecticut State Agency web sites can provide a great source of information and supplement your existing library collections. In this hands-on workshop you will explore numerous state agency web sites that can help you answer inquiries like:

Does the state owe me money?
Do I need a license for....
I want to start a small business
What do I have to do to start a raffle?
Are there endangered species in CT?
How do I contact my state representative?

If you are curious about a particular agency, email Nancy (Nancy.Peluso at ct.gov with the subject line "Connecticut Agency Workshop" and she'll be sure to include it in the discussion.

Basic Book Repair: Tools & Techniques - May 24th (WLSC)
Would you like to save money by getting more uses per book? Would you like to keep that out-of-print book in circulation to meet your library patron's needs? Would you like to quickly repair the broken book spine that came in your new book shipment, rather than waiting for a replacement? Many repairs that can extend the life of your library collection are fast and simple, and can be done with easy-to-obtain, inexpensive materials. This workshop is appropriate for a library staff member or volunteer who will be doing book repair. Emphasis will be on simple repairs for the everyday public or school library collection, rather than on archival or long-term preservation techniques.

Topics covered will include:
*Basic book handling and cleaning, and some damage prevention measures
*Materials needed for basic book repair and where to get them
*How to repair a torn page & how to reinsert a loose page or group of pages
*How to reattach a paperback cover
*Some repair options for simple hardcover spine problems
*When to cover, re-sew, encase, or rebind books
*Resources for book repair - websites, brochures, etc.

**HANDS-ON: BRING SOME DAMAGED BOOKS TO SHARE AND REPAIR - Some supplies will be available for sharing. Optionally, you may also bring your own book repair tools to work with, such as scissors, box cutter or Xacto knife, ruler, bone folder, glue stick, and/or glue brush.**

Libraries and the Era of the Learner: A Vision for the Future - May 16th at 2 pm EST
To registration: https://oclc.webex.com/oclc/onstage/g.php?t=a&d=713247453

Join us for a discussion exploring lifelong learning as an economic driver in the 21st century and the expanding role of libraries in this "era of the learner." Building on discussions about 21st century skills and workforce development, we'll hear from futurist Garry Golden on the changing workforce and the role that public libraries can play. We're excited to take a glimpse into the future and to hear how libraries can identify changes, explore implications and pave the way for learners in the 21st century. This session will build on discussions from a face-to-face convening to be held in April, but will benefit and be of interest to all working in libraries.

Understanding Compassion Fatigue in Your Library - May 31st at 2 pm EST
To registration: https://oclc.webex.com/oclc/onstage/g.php?t=a&d=714852202

You love your job. You love your library. You love helping your patrons and giving them the extra attention that lets them know you care. But there are days when you've given just about all you have to give. At the end of the day you feel drained, or irritated, or both! You may have achieved "compassion fatigue." The term, which is used frequently in medical settings, describes a caregiver's reaction to chronic stress that results in feelings of hopelessness, anxiety, self-doubt, lack of focus and fatigue. This webinar will help you recognize the symptoms and the situations that may trigger compassion fatigue and understand how it affects you and your working environment. Explore ways to take care of yourself so you can continue to show compassion and give your patrons the care they need.
