Older Adults LSTA Grant Writing Workshop - Thurs., Jan. 3rd (Willimantic LSC)
The Division of Library Development offers directed programming for Older Adults grants which will provide up to $5,000 to libraries to provide or enhance library programs, services, materials and collections* to older adults who have difficulty accessing traditional library services or extend lifelong learning programs to older adults. Attending one informational grant-writing session is required in order for a library to submit an application.

Word 2010 - Wed., Jan. 9th (Middletown LSC)
Devote a day to mastering the topic in this workshop and multiply the efficiency with which you can work in Word 2010. Learn how to do mail merges the easy way. Eliminate inconsistent tabs and indents, create and format tables with ease, and discover great tips on applying attractive customized formats. In addition workshop participants will explore how to change the tools on tool bars, and work with graphical objects in their document.

Topics will include:
Mail merge made easy
Copying information between documents
Creating and using styles
Indents, tabs, and tables
Customized bullets and special characters
Tailoring the toolbar to suit you
Managing graphics within a document


Using PowerPoint 2010 in Library Presentations - Tues., Jan. 15th (Middletown LSC)
Would you like to improve your ability to get your message across to other people? PowerPoint presentations are an exciting way to communicate your message to an audience. You can master most aspects of PowerPoint in this day-long workshop. You can learn how to create a simple and colorful presentation for use with the public or your colleagues. Each participant will have time to work on his/her own presentation.

At this workshop you will:
Learn the basics of PowerPoint 2010
Understand the different views within PowerPoint
Create organization charts and Excel type graphs
Import colorful templates
Create speakers note pages
Add transitions and builds to your presentation
Animate text and graphics

Every Child Ready to Read Grant Writing Workshop - Fri., Jan. 18th (Willimantic LSC)
The Division of Library Development offers directed grants that provide $3,000 (with 25% match requirement) to aid libraries in projects that introduce and/or extend the use of the Every Child Ready to Read,(ECRR)<http://everychildreadytoread.org/> program developed by the American Library Association's Association of Library Service to Children<http://www.ala.org/alsc/>. Attending one informational grant-writing session is required in order for a library to submit an application.

Basic PC Maintenance - Wed., Jan. 23rd (Willimantic LSC)
Is your PC running slower? Have you ever defragged a drive? How do you protect your computer from Trojans and spyware? Learn some simple tips to keep your PC running longer and faster in this hands-on class.

Your Library, Your Town: Data You Need To Know - Tues., Jan. 29th (Middletown LSC)
This half-day workshop is an overview of census, and federal and state agency data available to librarians and media specialists interested in planning programs for their community, and answering reference questions about their communities. In this hands-on workshop we will learn how to access community data to better serve our library patrons. Looking at this data can help us learn the answers to these questions and others:

How many cars drive past your library each day?
How many students in your area are not fluent in English?
Is your town mill rate changing
Any black bear sitings in your area?
What were your towns election results for the last municipal elections?
Any hazardous waste sites in your town?

Our workshop leader will be Nancy Peluso, Federal Documents Librarian at the Connecticut State Library. She is an experienced reference librarian and conducts hands-on workshops on federal and state agency websites, as well as navigating census.gov, for librarians across the state.

The Impact of an Ice Cream Sundae - Jan. 15th @ 2 pm EST
What does an ice cream sundae have to do with library partnerships? Let's pretend that your community organizations (school, academic, public and special libraries, and other local organizations) are your favorite kind of ice cream. Now let's ladle your favorite toppings over the ice cream to represent  the organizations' resources, programs, personnel and funding.  How can the ice cream "mix" with the toppings to be the most luscious dessert possible for the most people? We hear about libraries that are leaders in innovation, implementing ideas that keep the library growing and vital.
