[CASL-L] Refunds for lost books later found

While it's not a written policy, we definitely return the money if the book turns up, at least while the student is ours or in the district.  Sounds like it's something we should MAKE a written policy, if it's turning into an issue in other districts.  
 
(Slightly under-the-table suggestion:  We deposit fine money every month or so, not daily, and we always keep a bit in order to make change.  Instead of going the cutting-a-check route, do the refund from the fine money box, making sure YOU keep a written record, such as in the student's online circ. account.)

Hi everyone:
 
In the past, students who lost a library book would have to pay for it or their report card would be withheld. When we received the money, our policy has always been that if they found the book, the money would be reimbursed. I was informed today by our business manager that they changed the handbook (I wasn't consulted or informed) and all payments for books are nonrefundable. They will no longer issue refund checks. Even though they appear to be unyielding on this, I am wondering how many schools have a non-refundable policy? I am very much against this for many reasons, but perhaps I am alone in my feelings about this. Just looking for some feedback.
