Nutmeg Children’s Book Award Announces 2012 Winners
The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins and Stolen Children by Peg Kehret are this year's Nutmeg Book Award winners.
The Hunger Wars was a runaway winner in the Teen level 2012 Nutmeg Award, while Stolen Children edged out Deep, Dark and Dangerous by Mary Downing Hahn by only 54 votes out of nearly 19,000 that were cast to win the Intermediate Level voting.
This award encourages children in grades 4-8 to read quality literature and to choose their favorite from a list of ten nominated titles. Jointly sponsored by the Connecticut Library Association (CLA) and the Connecticut Association of School Librarians (CASL), the Nutmeg Committee is comprised of teen readers, children's librarians and school library media specialists who are members of our sponsoring organizations. Next year, the Nutmeg Award will be adding a high school level list.
Almost 30,000 students from 500 schools and libraries voted in total.
The Hunger Games, a dystopian fiction story, received 6,110 votes to finish far ahead of the second place title, The Compound by S.A. Bodeen, which received 1,018 votes in the teen category. Stolen Children, a thriller about a 14-year-old girl who is kidnaped while baby-sitting a young child, received 5,568 votes to narrowly defeat Deep, Dark and Dangerous: A Ghost Story, which received 5,114 votes in the Intermediate category.
Our thanks go to all of the schools and libraries which participated in this year's voting.
