Perhaps The Black Pearl, by Scott O'Dell, a Newbury Award Winner (1968) on a similar theme; for grades 4-8.

The 8th grade L.A. teachers are planning to read "The Pearl" next year and want a companion book at a lower reading level. Any suggestions?
