[CASL-L] Nutmeg Timing

I too prefer the old time frame. Starting in February gave me time to introduce them to the current 4th and 5th graders and then in late Spring introduce Nutmegs in general to the 3rd soon to be 4th graders. We stop book check out at the end of May early June for all but Monday classes which have to be stopped in mid May due to not seeing them until mid June due to time off on Mondays for Memorial Day and a Teacher work day. I'll be introducing them and then they won't be able to take them out.
February is a time when they seem to have more time to read.
May is the time to finish and present long term projects. With Book Fairs, Field days and Field trips, visit to the middle school (5th grade) and visit from the Teen Librarian (again 5th graders) etc... there isn't time to do what needs to be done to get them interested in thenew Nutmegs. Whatever I get of them in June is for book talking the summer reading lists and to remind themthe Nutmegs are also part of their lists.
Also my PTO buys be 7 copies of each and they want their money spent early in the year not held until late in the school year. Granted they budget the money but whatever is unspent they then use for other things for that current school year.
Don't even get me started on a younger kid Nutmeg. To me Nutmegs were all about chapter books and a kind of special rite of passage because they finally got to do something extra special. The younger children won't understand the specialness of this state award. it will be frustrating for those struggling readers. I don't put paper back books in my collection except for the Nutmegs. Skinny books get lost on the shelves and easily damaged. It will be frustrating for the parents if they can't get access to the books at the public library.
I'd like to hear what other have to say about this 'new' section of the Nutmegs.
I wish more people had input into these decisions.

I agree! I prefer the old time frame, as it gives me time to purchase books (while my funds are still available!) and an opportunity to read the books/prepare for the public announcement in February.

I am just curious how others feel about the change to the timing of the Nutmeg announcement and voting.

In addition to the 5 copies of each title that our library purchases, the LA department buys 10 copies of each title as well. Those are loaned out to the public library to ensure that students have access to the the books throughout the summer.
