Improving your Library's Mobile Services Webinar - Sept. 12th (MLSC)

More Information: Making your library's website and resources more accessible to mobile devices like iPads and Smartphones is essential. But if you're new to the mobile web, it can be hard to know where to start and what guidelines to follow. In this workshop, Kim will show you how to understand the mobile web with an eye towards expanding your library's mobile services.

This workshop includes the following topics:
* The significance of the mobile web for libraries
* Current mobile library practices
* Best practices for building a mobile presence and bringing your library up-to-date
* Engaging in marketing, outreach and content-building on the mobile web

RDA Essentials - Sept. 17th (MLSC)
Resource Description and Access (RDA) is the new content standard adopted by the Library of Congress and other National Libraries on March 31, 2013. It is different in many ways from the Anglo-American Cataloging Rules (AACR2) in use since 1978, but similar in other ways. This half-day workshop, led by cataloging consultant Dodie Gaudet, chronicles RDA's development, the thought process behind its structure, how it works, its differences from and similarities to AACR2, and where to look for more information.

Refresh Your reQuest ILL Skills - Sept. 19th (MLSC)
Are you getting the most from reQuest ILL? Do you have a hunch that there are some features of reQuest ILL that you could be using, but aren't? Do you have any questions about how the ILL system works?

Attend this session to refresh your skills and expand your reQuest ILL knowledge. Steve Cauffman will review the reQuest ILL system, particularly the Participant Record and the Lending Policy. You will be able to adjust your library's reQuest ILL settings during the session.

Who should attend?
If your reQuest ILL skills need refreshing or if you are a new to reQuest ILL, you are encouraged to attend.

Dealing with Difficult Patrons (ALA Editions Webinar) - Sept. 19th (MLSC)
Please Note: This is a group-viewing of an ALA TechSource webinar  taking place at the Middletown Library Service Center.

Every library employee encounters difficult patrons and users from time to time. Whether it's a troublesome group of teenagers, a loud patron, an angry or even dangerous person, the experience of dealing with someone unpleasant is common for staff in libraries of just about all sizes and types.

In this workshop, library safety and security expert Steve Albrecht will show you how you can deal with these problem patrons effectively, efficiently, and without creating major disruptions in your library environment. Library employees at all levels will learn strategies for dealing with such patrons and effectively diffusing challenging situations.

Topics include:
*Developing a security plan and consistent responses for all situations.
*Understanding the need for security thinking in the "new" library
environment.
*How to more accurately define workplace violence, its perpetrators, and types of threats.
*Enforcing Library Codes of Conduct.
*Providing "high-risk" customer service.
*Interacting more effectively with law enforcement.
*Using realistic communication tools that work for all patrons.

Personal Digital Archiving - Sept. 23, 2013 (MLSC)
To preserve and share our personal collections of digital photos, documents, and videos we must manage them with care. At this event we'll discuss the challenges of personal digital archiving and considerations for guiding patrons through such challenges. We'll discuss organization and preferred formats for photos, records, audio, and video, as well as strategies for long-term storage.
