[CASL-L] Student librarians

I student taught in my certification program--sort of.  I already had a job running the library for a parochial high school, which didn't REQUIRE certification, but RECOMMENDED it--and I knew I eventually wanted to work in a public school system.  My program allowed me to use my job experience as student teaching, reporting to and periodically observed by my supervisor at the university.  This was back in the '80s--not sure if it would fly today.

The most frustrating thing is that, when I wanted to cross-certify in English (my undergrad major), though I had all my academic courses, the state wanted me to student teach again.  I tried to explain that I HAD student taught, had written goals and lesson plans, etc., but they wouldn't accept that it had been as part of a teacher librarian certification program.  Now, I would LOVE to offer an elective on YA lit, but can't because I'm not certified in English. ...

Do student librarians going through a traditional route to certification experience some type of student teaching?

Just curious.
