[CASL-L] SCSU loses accreditation

Hello,

I am an MLS student at SCSU (will graduate this May).

There was an informational meeting this past Saturday about the change in ALA status.

The current MLS program will wind down over the next two years and close in December 2015 - when the ALA accredited time frame ends. A new program is being cultivated and will begin some time after that - and will pursue new ALA accrediting. This plan for a new program at SCSU is intentionally beginning without any overlap with the current program so there is not ambiguity in ALA accredited degrees.

Current MLS students were given a timeline to finish the necessary courses and to complete prior to the December 2015 end date.

ALL of those with a degree prior to December 2015 have nothing to worry about the validity of their degree or how it will be reflected due to the ALA change for SCSU. Your degree does not lose any value.

I am quite confident in my degree and feel that the program prepared me for my career choice.

Sincerely,

Ms. Cara McConnell

This is a very sad situation. I hope the higher administration at SCSU has been supportive of the program.
Library science is still an important, while evolving, field and should not be neglected.

If there are any representatives for the Southern MLS program on this listserv, it would be helpful in my opinion
if an email were sent to us all communicating the program's response to this situation and what the plans are
to re-acquire accreditation. It seemed to me that some of the problem had to do with communication and
administration of the program, if I am correct? Let's start with good communication with your alumni.

Thank you.

According to the article, students who are currently enrolled will have two years to finish their program and the degree will still be accredited. Still, sad news...I'm an alum, class of 2006...the curriculum was rigorous enough overall then...I hope they get their act together again so that our state students have the MLS option...

I just read the news that SCSU lost its ALA accreditation. http://wnpr.org/post/scsu-library-grad-program-loses-ala-accreditation

The story was on NPR about 2 weeks ago but, I just heard about it. I graduated in 1999 with my library degree but I'm wondering if this will negatively impact those of us who are job hunting. I don't have my date of graduation on my resume but, I'm thinking of putting it there to show that I received my degree when they were still accredited.
