If any of you have been fortunate to attend a national conference, you
know that is customary to have live music for the opening of the Exhibit
Hall. We have been trouble finding a local group willing to donate their
time to do so next month. We would appreciate it if any CASL members who
work in districts in the Hartford area would check with their school's
music department to see if they can help us out.
It doesn't have to be a full marching band. If you district has a jazz
band, for example, that might be the perfect size ensemble for this. The
group would start playing shortly before 5:30, either right next to the
opening of the exhibit hall, or in small pods along the way from the
room where the opening ceremony is being held to the exhibit hall. These
two venues are on different floors of the convention center, so we're
not asking anyone to play their instruments while riding an escalator
down from one floor to another, although most high school kids would
probably consider that good fun! We're looking for some upbeat music to
add to the festive mood. The group would finish playing by 6 p.m., by
which point most attendees will be inside the exhibit hall.
The bad news: We have no money in the conference budget to pay for
musical entertainment. If a school group volunteered to do this, they
would be responsible for all of their costs, including transportation to
the convention center.
The good news: This is an exciting experience before a large,
appreciative audience. The school and the group will get some nice
publicity before the conference and during the conference itself.
It doesn't have to be a school group, either. If someone knows of a
community band, or a drum and bugle corps, for example, which might be
interested, please have them contact us.
The date is Thursday, Nov. 14. The group would need to be at the
convention center by 5 p.m. or so to get set up, and would be done by 6.
