[CASL-L] tracking purpose

We have a nearly identical system and resolve problems the same way. We call study halls to confirm who was sent instead of delivering passes and we have no interns.

My students get their Media Center passes from their subject teachers only. I have them printed in small books (see attached pic) and distribute them to all of the faculty. The students must plan and get the pass ahead of time so they arrive before the bell rings. It's not a perfect system but it works fairly well. Some teachers give passes to any student that asks and students figure that out pretty quickly so that can become a problem as the year progresses. But if a student is acting inappropriately or is being unproductive I can check the pass or call the teacher (if the assignment is not written on the pass). That phone call seems to work. Once the teacher hears that one of his/her students is not working appropriately they'll usually hold off on giving that student a pass for a while.

I have MC interns every period. They record the information in a binder and the passes get delivered to the study hall teacher for attendance.

I added an "assignment" column to our sign in sheet when I first started at WHS to remind students that their study halls work were free "work" periods, not free time. It really has helped create a more academic environment. Unfortunately, it would not be very helpful to track specific activities as many students simply write HW (homework). A few actually will write bio-lab, essay, project, ppt., get a book, etc.

I wonder in your schools do students need passes and who do they get them from, librarians, study hall teacher, or subject teacher?

This year, I started using a program called LibraryTrac. I have 2 old imacs that I use for kiosks and the kids can sign in.
It uses dropdown menus that you can customize. The gentleman that sells it was so cooperative in helping me design it specifically for us. It also has a calendar feature for booking your spaces. It was really reasonably priced.
The main menu looks like this:

The student log looks like this (I cut off the kids' names):

Hi,

I also use a paper sign in sheet and remind students it's ok to be honest because it helps me to show the administration what areas in the library need more support, like technology. It lead to me getting a laptop cart that had previously been kept in a teacher's room and now is used by any student in the library or can be checked out by other teachers. It also serves a second purpose in case of emergencies, like a fire, I take the list with me and hand it to the administrator in charge of reconciling where students are.

I hope to one day have bar codes on student IDs and when the scan the ID they can type it into the system, but that's a far off dream.

Can't wait to read other ideas about this!

Hi everyone,

I am in the process of trying to find a way to "track" or collect data on what students are coming to the library to do. Many come to sit and do homework and chat with friends, while others browse the Internet or type papers. Besides constantly monitoring every student throughout the day, I created a sign in sheet where as the students sign in, they also put down what they are working on while here (of course we all know that there will probably be some discrepancy as students "wander" off task, but it seemed like a good way to begin). Anyway, I just started this today, and thought I would just put it out there to you all:

Do any of you track students' purpose for coming to your library media center and how do you do it?

Thank you!
