[CASL-L] "Borrow the New Book First" Contests - Thoughts and Ideas

Hi Everyone,

I have two shiny, new copies of Diary of A Wimpy Kid 8: Hard Luck being shipped to me as I write this and I am so excited to be able to provide them to my students on the release date of the book. I'm not a huge DoaWK fan myself (I've only read the first one and I thought Greg Heffley was pretty mean), but I know the kids are going to be clamoring over the book for weeks (probably for the rest of the year!  And I am glad that it has reached reluctant readers, of course.).  I thought I'd eliminate fighting and students from the first class of the day always getting the books by holding a contest among my third, fourth and fifth graders to see who would be given the option to take out the book first.  Has anyone done this with some success?  I was thinking I'd probably do a random drawing of sorts...should I just put everyone's name in the drawing to begin with and go from there? Or should I use this as an incentive for good behavior - your name goes
into the drawing if...what?  And is it fair to say a fifth grade girl and a fifth grade boy will be drawn first, then when they return the books, fourth grade names will be drawn, and then third?  What have you tried? What has worked for you? Any suggestions?

Thanks!
