Date: Wednesday, November 06, 2013
Time:2:30 PM
Location: Avon Free Public Library
This is an online group webinar, which will be held at the Avon Free Public Library.
Decisions about library programs and services are typically made by library staff, using anecdotal experience as a guide to understanding community wants and needs. But marshaling hard data will give you a much more accurate picture. This workshop will show you how to gather community data in order to assess your library users' needs and desires, and then plan services accordingly. The instructors will use their experience at the highly-regarded Topeka and Shawnee County Public Library as a model, highlighting sources of community data that are likely to already exist and ways that such data can be gathered by library staff. You'll learn how to combine your staff's expertise with concrete data so your library can make wise decisions, forgoing the need to hire an external vendor.
Tom Newman, State Library Data Coordinator, will facilitate a brief discussion after the webinar.
This event is free. Registration is required.

What Would You Do If...? An Emergency Preparedness Forum<http://evanced.info/cslib/evanced/eventsignup.asp?ID=4668&rts=&disptype=&ret=eventcalendar.asp&pointer=&returnToSearch=&num=0&ad=&dt=mo&mo=11/1/2013&df=calendar&EventType=ALL&Lib=&AgeGroup=&LangType=0&WindowMode=&noheader=&lad=&pub=1&nopub=&page=&pgdisp=>
Date: Friday, November 15, 2013
Time: 9:00 AM
Location: Wallingford Public Library
Recent tragic events in Newtown and Boston along with Super Storm Sandy have confirmed the necessity of emergency planning in all public institutions including libraries. Libraries are truly public places and often have unique security issues and needs. When Sandy hit in late October 2012, Connecticut libraries became ad-hoc disaster response centers, providing services and critical information to Connecticut residents in need. Most importantly, Connecticut libraries and librarians did what they do best: they met the needs of their communities above and beyond -- whether by extending their hours, providing computers and internet access, serving as FEMA information centers, or simply being a place where the community could gather to share stories, exchange information, or just to comfort each other.
The focus of this forum is to bring public librarians together with the emergency planning community, public safety personnel, security experts, and state agencies to discuss the role libraries and information professionals can play in planning for emergency preparedness.
Join us on November 15 for a panel discussion, followed by a Q & A, with:
-Vincent Riccio of the Security Academy of Connecticut
-Jane Cullinane from the CT State Library Preservation Office
-Jeff Getz, Chief of CT Supreme Court Police
-Margaret Borchers, Director of the Edith Wheeler Memorial Library and member of the Town of Monroe Emergency Management Team.
After we hear from each of the panelists, we will open the floor to questions from the audience.
This event is free. Registration is required.
