[CASL-L] Token-embedded URLs

Dear Collective Brain,
Can someone explain to me how token-embedded URLs work? Can I request that all of my database vendors provide me with token-embedded URLs so that students will be able to access all of our databases by going to a password-protected page without having to enter individual usernames and passwords? Currently, we have IP-authentication, but now that kids are bringing their own devices, we have begun experiencing a fair number of access issues. I would really appreciate a basic explanation of the pros and cons of embedded URLs and how I should go about changing over to this new system. I have LibGuides, and it appears easy to password-protect a single guide.
Thanks for any help.
