> For a second year, The Carle joins forces with the Highlights Foundation to offer an intensive literacy workshop for educators. The focus will be on providing teachers with language-rich curricula that encourage both emerging and beginning readers. In addition to aligning with core standards, each workshop session combines sound pedagogical tools and kid-friendly activities. This workshop expands on the power of the picture book as a potent tool in the development of literacy and critical and creative thinking skills that contribute to later school success.

> Mondays, November 3, 17, and 24
> 10 a.m. - 1 p.m.
> $9 per person

> On select Mondays in November, Picture Book Theatre will be performing Leo Lionni's Tico and the Golden Wings and Geraldine, the Music Mouse as a special program for students in grades 1-3. In addition to the 45-minute production, this 3-hour visit to The Carle will include a talk-back with producer Therese Brady Donohue, a studio art activity, and self-guided time in the galleries. Each student will receive a copy of a Leo Lionni book.

> Simmons Courses Open to Non-Degree Students

> Simmons College and The Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art are pleased to announce Fall 2014 course offerings. Classes are for candidates in the four graduate programs in children's literature offered at The Carle, as well as for non-degree students. The classes, held weekday evenings, begin in September and are held at The Museum's Amherst location.  For registration information, please contact cathryn.mercier at simmons.edu.

The event begins at 3:30 pm and is free and open to all educators as space permits. Free materials for classrooms will be available and light refreshments will be served. > Innovations in Education: A Study Tour of the Early Childhood Centers of Pistoia, Italy

> (30 PDPs) The Innovations in Education study tour, launched in 2010, has quickly become known for the variety of learning opportunities it offers its participants, as well as its intimate view of Pistoia. Participants tour school environments; learn about the schools' history; talk with school staff and teachers about both practical and philosophic aspects of teaching and learning; and share with other participants their observations, beliefs and practice. Participants also have the opportunity to experience the history and culture of Pistoia, where the value of aesthetics and deeply held beliefs about the potential and rights of all children and families are so foundational.
