ILS 599 MakerSpace 2.0: Retinkering Libraries – a 3 credit, 5-day institute [When registering, if "1.0" is listed for #credits, just click on it and change to "3.0"]

A spectacular spectacular [sic] week is planned for introducing new and enriching current knowledge about and experience with the Maker Movement in libraries and retinkering libraries to better support a community’s and society’s changing needs. 

Planned activities include speakers; a panel; a tour of a MakerSpace and Design Thinking Stations; hands-on experience with Squishy Circuits, Robotics, Soldering, Arduino (including coding), 3D printers, Wearable Technology, Makey Makey, MakerFaires, and more. 

The Blackboard course shell will have links to resources; in addition, print resources will be distributed during the institute. 

Each day will begin with coffee, conversation and meet-ups at 9:30 am [Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday on Southern’s campus in Engleman (EN) C140; and on Wednesday in Westport Library]. Planned activities begin at 10 am and lunch is planned for 12:30-1:00 pm each day. The week will be a packed and exciting learning community that will wind down each day’s activities with a reflection (3:30-4:00 pm). 

The institute is a 3 credit graduate course that counts as an elective toward the MLS degree. A limited number of $900 tuition scholarships are being make available to participants. Applications should be submitted immediately. Awards are expected to be made in early July.

PARTIAL TUITION SCHOLARSHIPS for the institute-course ILS 599 80 MakerSpace 2.0: Retinkering the Library 
 
SCSU in partnership with the Westport Library is pleased to announce its 2014 partial-tuition scholarship awards, funded through an Institute for Museums and Library Services (IMLS) grant in support of the enhancement of the Westport Library’s MakerSpace to demonstrate how opportunities for patrons and staff to learn and practice a variety of "maker skills" can change the perception of contemporary libraries and broaden the library audience. 

The scholarships and awards provide support to graduate students and professionals in the library field who want to build skills to develop maker spaces and programs within their institutions. 
 
Up to twenty partial tuition scholarship awards ($900 each) will be available for students enrolling in MakerSpace 2.0: Retinkering the Library. The course is offered through the Department of Information and Library Science, Southern Connecticut State University, New Haven, CT. The course will run as an institute the week of August 11-14, 2014.  
 
The primary criteria for these scholarships and awards are:   
 
1) the applicant’s desire to have working knowledge and experience of how to develop and maintain a maker space, and   
2) the scholarship committee’s desire to have the widest diversity of participants.
