" The Chronicling America Historic Newspaper Database: An Introduction for Connecticut Genealogy, Library, History and Cultural Organizations“
Presentation by Nathan Yarasavage from the Library of Congress”
Hosted by the Connecticut State Library and the Connecticut Professional Genealogists Council, Inc.

Nathan Yarasavage will give a presentation about using Chronicling America, a source of over 8 million searchable pages of historic newspapers rich with primary source and genealogical material. The presentation will be held Wednesday, November 5, 2014, 10:00 A.M. to 11:30 A.M., Hearing Room 1B, Legislative Office Building, 300 Capitol Avenue, Hartford CT 06106. Nathan is a Digital Projects Specialist within the Serial and Government Publications Division at the Library of Congress. He works primarily on the National Digital Newspaper Program (NDNP), a nation-wide digitization program sponsored jointly by the National Endowment for the Humanities and the Library of Congress. Since 2010, he has been involved directly with NDNP technical development and outreach activities promoting the web site, Chronicling America: Historic America Newspapers, a repository of millions of freely available newspaper pages digitized as part of the NDNP.

The Connecticut State Library is digitizing 1910-1922 of the Norwich Bulletin and the Bridgeport evening farmer/Bridgeport times with a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities. The first ten thousand pages of the Norwich Bulletin have just been made available in Chronicling America. Each issue is a treasure trove of local news, society news, and tidbits of family history. Following the presentation by Yarasavage, there will be a brief discussion led by Jane Cullinane and Gail Hurley of the Connecticut State Library on plans for digitizing more Connecticut newspapers and archiving them at the new Connecticut Digital Archive. Please note that public parking is available on the first floor of the LOB parking garage. On-street metered parking & commercial lots nearby. To Register to Attend: http://is.gd/v8CKwO.
