[CASL-L] food in school libraries

We don't allow food or beverages including water in the media center. We especially have to keep a close watch during lunch. I agree with Cathy that the ban exists as a hygiene measure. Every year we have to spray for ants. (The students are not impressed with this, until I tell them that we had a snake in here once.) Oh well, we do what we can.

The issue is bigger than food/no food. We're carpeted. It doesn't get cleaned very often. Crumbs get ground into the carpet and attract creepy crawlies. Much as it's a losing battle with the kids, I try to convince them it's hygiene, not meanness, that motivates my requests to eat elsewhere.

 Good
 afternoon.

I'm wondering how many high school libraries allow
students to eat while working. Do you have specific
policies about that? Do you allow them to bring food
from the cafeteria or just snacks? Are beverages near
 computers a problem?

 Thanks for your time.
