[CASL-L] food in school libraries

Food is problematic here. The carpet is 20+ with a variety of stains and 'flowering' in the summer when the AC has problems... and this school runs on Dunkin. Literally. Teachers and students are there every day. Southington franchisees are doing very well. We have about 2200 people in the building every day.

Here are the ground rules: Coffee and .... ok before or after school. During school hours- 7:35-2:15 a working lunch is ok is the library/yearbook office at the table and leave no breadcrumb trail or ick in the microwave. Dishes used must be washed. Oddly, this works very well- it is used often and they adjourn to the main floor or stay in there are read or do homework. I like teaching them the protocol for a working lunch because that is so pervasive in the adult world.

 No open container of liquid on a table near a school device- laptop, chromebook or PC. On your own with BYOD. Snacking strongly discouraged but it occurs with the stealth hand in the backpack. Many kids don't have lunch and eat in many classrooms or on the run. Absolutely no food brought up from cafe- ever.

We've submitted in the budget for commercial grade stain resistant carpet squares - rather pricey for 7000 sq ft - definitely needed. The B&G supervisor tells me if anything spills on these it won't matter but if or when it is approved, that will be the right time to ban the DD and any open containers of liquid that don't have a cap to close.

No food here.  I can still recall the horrid carpet I inherited with the coffee stains.  The "new" carpet is now ten years old and still looks great.  While it would be great for the students if I allowed food, I know what the carpet would soon look like if I did.  We are also prone to mice!
