[CASL-L] listening comprehension

Okay, here's what I was able to find.
Many public libraries offer Hoopla--borrow-able digital audiobooks, movies, music, etc. Different libraries may have different collections, much like Overdrive. HOWEVER, they cannot be downloaded and saved for future use; you have it for 2 weeks (I think), then it goes away. Can't be saved to disc (trust me, I tried with some of the music selections). Not a great selection of children's nonfiction: some Magic School Bus, some dinosaur titles, "Chasing Lincoln's Killer" (Swanson), "Charlie Needs a Cloak" (DePaola), "China's Long March" (Fritz), "Coretta Scott King" (Shange), and a handful--truly a SMALL handful--of non-notable others.
Sometimes audiobook producers offer samplers of their most recent titles (generally not nonfiction) at conferences. Might be worth contacting the individual producers and asking...??? No samplers showed up on the producer websites I checked (Scholastic, LiveOak, Random House, Brilliance).
The CT library service centers show 4 nonfiction/children's audio titles, including Jim Murphy's "The Great Fire." Which is out until December.
Are you familiar with ALSC's "Notable Children's Recordings" lists? I don't know if you have a budget for this initiative, but the lists pretty much always include very high quality nonfiction as well as fiction, and would be a good start for collection development to support listening skills. Some of this past year's nf selections were really, really good.
As an audiobook lover heading out for my commute where I will finish "The Kite Runner," good luck and happy listening!!!

Hello all, I’m in the midst of
planning my SLO and one school-wide goal is to increase
listening comprehension. Our MAPS scores showed we are
quite low in the area of students listening to a non-fiction
passage and answering comprehension questions. Does
anyone know of resources (online or iPad apps) where I
could find a variety of K-5 non-fiction audio books or
passages (preferably free) for students to listen to? I
would not want them to be able to read along as this is
strictly for listening comprehension. If there are
comprehension questions to go with them, all the
better. Otherwise, I could create my own as I will
need to show data and growth. Thanks in advance, Torrie PhillipsK-5 Library Media
