[CASL-L] Speaking of Banned Books Week... Are you following the New Zealand story?

I'd heard about this.
I'm writing my doctoral dissertation on Aussie YA lit. When I was there interviewing authors and editors, they overwhelming said, "Oh, book banning--that's an American thing. It doesn't happen here." They admitted there aren't as many books published there with GLBTQ characters as we have here, and they need aboriginal authors--but censorship on this scale, not so much. Ironically, books by NZ children's author William Taylor ("Agnes the Sheep," "Knitwits") got me interested in AU/NZ lit, specifically BECAUSE they were so politically incorrect!

Great
minds think alike! I started preparing my Banned Books
Week display this morning. "Part-time Indian" is
#1 on the challenged list this year, followed by
"Persepolis" and "And Tango Makes
Three." Just sayin', but it's a disturbing
trend I'm seeing that more of the books being challenged
recently have, in some way, an Islamic theme, though
that's not the reason stated for the challenge.
Also, just received a Facebook post with a disturbing
experience by Bill Konigsburg. Let me check and see
whether he's okay with it being shared. It's very
Banned Books Week-appropriate.
