I used to do a similar project with middle school students. This website was a starting point for them. It has news headlines, average prices for things and a lot of popular culture information as well.

We use the World Almanac, Great Events from the 20th Century  and the Day by Day series.

A sociology class is researching the day they were born and how events from that day affect them today.  We used the New York Times Historical database and Keesing's Contemporary Archives, which ends for us in 1984.  What types of resources do you use for this type of research? Thanks.
