[CASL-L] Humanities World History book needed

How about Connections by James Burke, S&S 1995, reprint 2007, in paperback ($22.15 on Titlewave)? It focuses on inventions and technological progress, but there is a LOT of history involved, and not just "dead white guys" history. Burke also wrote The Day the Universe Changed, which is more history-focused, but it doesn't look like it's in print anymore--though Follett is showing it as an ebook. Both books accompanied PBS series, which I watched faithfully back in the day. My kind of series--a little history, a little science, a little art/music, a little sociology! I ran both by one of our non-honors World History teachers earlier this year, but she felt they were a little above her classes' reading level. Honors should be fine with Burke's writing.

 Good morning all.  A
challenge: My humanities (9th grade honors) teacher would
like to assign a book which covers world history (no small
task!)  He felt that Gombrich's A Little History of the
World was too easy a read.  He is open to a thematic
approach - Bryson's a Short History of Nearly Everything
is more of a science approach.  Any ideas?  They have, in
the past, read How the Irish Saved Civilization.  I think
he wants to go more broad- I am finding books with a
strong Western bias (The Way of the World, Fromkin; The
Human story, Davis)I love A History of the World
in 100 objects by Neil MacGragor (director of the British
Museum) but it is 700+ pages!
