[CASL-L] laptops/devices for individual student checkout

Hi Thomas,
Before we were 1:1, we did not lend laptops to students. They would have
to use one of our desktops in the library. Now that we are 1:1 and have
eliminated most computer labs, we lend Chromebooks and chargers for the day
to students who are not prepared. We have a cart of 30 in the library that
we check out through Follett. We lend out at least 20 a day. They go out
and come back at all times of the day. We have around 580 students. For
our population it works well. We have had only one or two damaged in the
two years we've been doing this and our tech department has been able to
fix them quickly. If students do not return them at the end of the day,
their name goes on a list and if they forget twice, they are banned for a
month. This clerical work is probably the most time-consuming part of the
lending, but I feel it is valuable. We are teaching them an important
lesson about being responsible and it does work. Most students who are
banned learn their lesson and either stop borrowing or become more
responsible about returning.
