I am a PreK-5 school and do 5 PrK classes a week. Our PreK is age 3 & 4 together which actually can be age 2-5 depending on the time of year and birthdays. My classes are 40 minutes which is long for the age group. Just finished my 3 year doing this.
Here is the format that works for me:

  *   Opening songs and fingerplays
  * Intro to the read aloud book topic, author, illustrator, if its about pets I ask what pets they have, etc. It varys to match the book and the objective of reading the particular book
  *   Read aloud
  * Coloring a picture with individual discussion of the book (thinking and retelling time). Picture has connection to the book and practice for writing your name. I resisted having a picture to color at first. So old school and seemed so simple but I discovered the children requested coloring every class after I did one. They need the fine motor skills. The need the social conversation while they color. I move table to table and have conversations with the kids. I print the title of the book and author on the coloring sheet and information for parents so when the picture goes home, its also a mini newsletter or at least a reminder that their kids have library once a week with them.
  * dancing and singing along with videos
  *   closure

Subject: [CASL-L] pre-school library

Dear Colleagues,

 Next year I will have a fixed schedule and will be servicing preschoolers, ages 3 to 5 years.

 I would appreciate information from anyone who serves preschool age children regarding the format of a library special/type of activities done with this age group.

Thank you,
