[CASL-L] online course requirement?

Most of our students really like Virtual High School.  They find that even though it is online, it is a very personal experience.   The course are very consistent in structure and they are also challenging.  There is opportunity for collaboration and discussion.  Also, my students enjoy meeting other students and teachers from all over the world.   A few of my AP Calculus BC students had a teacher from Sweden.  I also have students that have lasting relationships with students that they have met through Virtual High School.

We had some students taking online classes last year through Virtual High School but none to my knowledge this year.  One of them loved it, and the other hated it (preferring face to face).

I think a requirement is a great idea, so students can test whether their preferences while stakes are lower.  It could help them make post-graduation plans better.  I can see that happening down the line but my district is not exactly cutting edge so not here any time soon.

Our High School does not "require" students to take any online courses.  But they do offer course credit recovery as an option.  And on a few rare occasions, an online course has been approved when it is a subject that we do not offer, with monitoring by either an independent study teacher or a guidance counselor.

So if a Student has missed too many classes or is failing or has lost credit for a past course, they may take an online course to get credit for a course.  There is a "Blended Learning" Teacher who is the credit recovery teacher/primary monitor.  In addition, a few teachers and administrators, who are Administrators in the Edgenuity program.  These staff Edgenuity administrators are able to set a student up and monitor each students progress.   Some students who require more monitoring in person, or meeting time are scheduled into the classroom for a period each day with the "Blended Learning" teacher.   Others are able to log in on a Library Computer or on their own at home or during their free periods.

Edgenuity is the current program, and before last year, we had been using NOVA-NET or GRADPOINT.

Starting two summers ago, the school started SUMMER SCHOOL (credit recovery option) as a blended learning with partial online and partial in school attendance, required to meet with subject teachers for Science, History, English, etc. for a minimum number of times dependent on their online progress.  Little progress online through monitoring required more in school attendance.

Night School/Adult Education had also been using an online course provider with staff monitoring and certain number of in-class meetings.
