[CASL-L] Audio Textbooks

For Textbooks, we have used three sources:

1) Contact Vendor or ask district admin or staff who negotiate contracts with book vendors to provide Audiotext versions (some will if asked) or ask them to contact them and see if they would provide it.

2) Bookshare is for students who qualify through spec ed or ppt, etc. CT provides this to most schools in CT. Find out who in your district administers it and get an account to be able to set up qualifying students. (I am administrator and I set up teachers and students and they can directly download for themselves. Not commercially produced... not exciting versions... often volunteer readers of texts who they encourage not to put inflection or enthusiasm in their reading ... QUOTE: "to let student take his or her own meaning from the content." ... often monotone... not my favorite but it is provided to us.)

3) Learning Ally costs.... either a contract for a certain amount (several years we purchased $500. and as we used it for students it depleted.) They have specific readers you can buy or rent, or you can download in mp3 format to a smartphone, ipod, ipad, pc etc. ... these have had every textbook we needed including older copyrights. These have a separate file for every page of text, so a user can go right to a page if a teacher directs the class to go to a separate page of the textbook.

Learning Ally (https://www.learningally.org/) offers a lot of audio textbooks.

Bookshare (http://www.benetech.org/accessible-audio-textbooks/) is another option.

Hello Folks:

I’m looking for an audio version of a HS history textbook.

It’s the second week of school and I already can’t think.

Any pointing in the right direction would be great.

Thanks,
Matt
