Our Library Technology Certificate recently received renewed accreditation by the American Library Association (ALA-LSSC) and is fully online. This fall Library staff who have learned skills on the job and work in the areas of Public Services and/or Cataloging and Classification, but do not have formal training, have an opportunity to take Special Topics courses in these ALA-LSSC competency areas and earn the 1 course credit.

In these courses students learn how to apply and use the competency standards set by the ALA. Successful students may then elect to take Credit by Exam for an additional 3 credits of the regular class for a nominal cost, resulting with 4 college credits for their transcript.

Here is how it works:

  * To register use the Combined Application and Registration form for Library Technology Certificate. Proof of immunizations is not required as students do not come on campus.
  * Credit by Exam is an option for successful Special Topics students to receive up to 50% of certificate credit.
  * Blackboard and WebEx are the primary instructional tools for these online courses.

Credit by Exam:
Library Support Staff who currently work in libraries are offered an alternative route to receive course Credit by Exam. Credit by Exam may be awarded for up to 50% of the LTA certificate or 12 credits for a total of four LTA courses.

A student must successfully complete the 1-credit Special Topic course for Credit by Exam for the course area. In fall 2016 we offer two Special Topics: Credit by Exam for Foundations in Library Public Services and Credit by Exam for Cataloging and Classification.

At the end of the five-week Special Topics course, students will have learned and used the national American Library Association standards for the area of study. Students may then elect to take a final, project-based exam based on the ALA-LSSC standards ($15 fee). Upon passing the exam, students will receive 3 college credits for the specific course (LIB K101 – Introduction to Library Public Services or LIB K116 – Cataloging and Classification).

Registration:
Because the LTA program is fully online, students do not need to come to campus and thus are encouraged to register as a distance learning student using the Three Rivers Community College Combined Application and Registration Form.
