Some of the other responses have included authors who are actually American. And The Whale Rider is from New Zealand, not Australia. Maori is quite different from Australian Aboriginal. My doctoral dissertation, in progress, is on Aussie YA lit.

Here are others, many YA:

The Head of the Saint--Acioli (Brazil)
Zac and Mia--Betts (Australia)
The Power of One--Courtenay (South Africa/Australia)
Crime and Punishment--Dostoevsky (Russia)
The Name of the Rose--Eco (Italy)
Sophie's World--Gaarder (Norway)
Deadly, Unna?--Gwynne (Australia)
Surrender--Hartnett (Australia)
Metamorphosis--Kafka (Germany)
Tender Morsels--Lanagan (Australia)
Razorhurst--Larbalestier (Australia)
Palace Walk--Mahfouz (Egypt)
The Mango Season--Malladi (India/US/Denmark)
Sound of Waves--Mishima (Japan)
The Dark Light--Newth (Norway)
The Transformation--Newth (Norway)
Heart's Delight--Nilsson (Sweden)
You and You and You--Nilsson (Sweden)
Into that Forest--Nowra (Australia)
Shadow of the Wind--Ruiz Zafon (Spain/US)
Wish Maker--Sethi (Pakistan)
A Boy Called H--Senoh (Japan)
Balzac and the Little Chinese Seamstress--Sijie (China/France)
Jasper Jones--Silvey (Australia)
The Center of the World--Steinhofel (Germany)
The Book Thief--Zusak (Australia)
I am the Messenger--Zusak (Australia)

 Good morning!  My
12th grade English teachers are starting a unit in May -
they will be giving the students free choice to choose a
novel written by a non-American/non-British authors.

I have a list going already - but it looks a
 little...boring!
Can anyone send me some great fiction that fits
the author category?  Basically any author who isn't
 American or British!

 Thank you!
