The fully online program is for anyone who currently works in a library or is interested in a career in libraries offering:

  *   15-week Online Courses (3 credit)

  *   Flexible scheduling (12 - 14 weeks) determined mutually with instructor.
  *   Field Placement Internships – Gain meaningful work experience in a library.
Spring 2018 Courses

LIB K104 – Introduction to Reference Services (3 credits)                (Required)
Introduction to Reference Services Online is designed to familiarize students with the use of general and specialized reference procedures, services, and resources for public, school, and academic libraries.  Online instruction and activities will teach students how to conduct effective reference interviews, analyze patrons’ requests, and find subject information in both digital and print materials.   Students will identify, locate, and evaluate the quality, currency, and authority of a wide variety of reference sources.   This course also covers special topics in reference services including reader’s advisory, genealogy, health, and youth services.
LIB K123 – Introduction to Technical Services (3 credits)                   (Required)
Introduction to Technical Services is designed to provide students with an understanding of the use of bibliographic tools, the skills to use them appropriately, and a basic knowledge of the workflow in a library technical services department.  Students will also learn important strategies used in libraries to manage print and media collections.  This course is a prerequisite for Cataloging and Classification-- LIB K116 which will be offered in fall 2018.


LIB K202 – Field Placement (90-hr. Internship) (3 credits)                  (Elective)
Students develop personal learning goals, and with the faculty advisor, are placed in an appropriate library setting for 90 hours of internship learning.  Students have a librarian site supervisor who guides their work and mentors them on the job.  This course is especially valuable for those who wish to gain library experience or for those who may wish to experience a working in different type of library or museum. Approval from the Program Coordinator is required for registration.

In-state tuition is now offered for residents of Rhode Island, Massachusetts, and New York.  Reduced tuition is also offered to residents in Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine.
