For the Spring 2017 semester, Capital Community College, located in Hartford, Connecticut is offering the following courses as part of its Library Technical Assistant Program. Courses can be taken for professional development as well as enrolling in the certificate or degree program.

Introduction to Cataloging and Technical Services (LIB 102). Formerly listed as  LTA 102. This course is only offered in the Spring semesters.  Course begins Tuesday January 24. Course is listed in the online system under Library Technical Assistant.

This course prepares the student to function as technical assistants in cataloging, acquisitions, processing, materials preservation and serials control. Emphasis on automation related to the Technical Services area.

Supervised Field Placement (LIB 202).

Day and Time:  TBA
Instructor: Karen DeLoatch

This course is a supervised on-the-job experience in a public, academic, school or special library that will reinforce knowledge acquired in the classroom. Prerequisite:  Both LIB 101 and LIB 102 must be completed before enrolling. Also,  permission of the LTA Program Coordinator is required. Introduction to Visual Communication (COM 105).

Friday 9:00 am-11:54 am
Instructor: Catherine Erik-Soussi

Visual communication is the process of organizing, designing, and creating messages in print and multimedia form that meet specific purposes and practical needs.  This course introduces students to that process, reflecting the elements of structured content, form, media, and audience characteristics, while also introducing them to common electronic tools used in visual message creation.  Students apply these principles in the production process while designing and developing their own projects using instructional audiovisual media hardware and software. Course is listed in the online course search system under Communication and Speech.

Introduction to Mass Communication (COM 101). Students can take this course instead of Introduction to Visual Communication (COM 105).

Tuesday and Thursday 10:05 am-11:26 am
Instructor: Jennifer Thomassen

This course begins with a review of basic communication theory, followed by exploration of the history and nature of mass communication in American society. Topics include the technological development and business structure of print and electronic media, media professions, government regulation of the mass media, and the media's impact on culture and society. Special emphasis will be placed on how digital technology and the Internet continue to affect traditional mass media processes and forms. Course is listed in the online course search system under Communication and Speech.

Social Media in Contemporary Society (COM 113). Students can take this course instead of Introduction to Visual Communication (COM 105).

Monday 5:30 pm-8:12 pm

An introduction to using social media effectively in the professional environment . Students will analyze contemporary social media and design messages in order to communicate effectively with a variety of audiences.  Emphasis is placed on the roles that social media play in shaping identity and public discourse . Prerequisite: Eligibility for ENG*097 & ENG*073 or permission of
Instructor.  NOTE: This course is cross-listed as SOC*107 . Students cannot take both COM*113 and SOC*107 for credit. Course is listed in the online course search system under Communication and Speech.

Introduction to Software Applications (CSA 105). This course was previously called Using Microcomputers CIS 105. Course is listed in the online system under Computers- Applications.

Day and Time: Morning, afternoon and Saturday sessions are available.  It is also offered online.

This course teaches the use of microcomputers as an office productivity tool. It covers creating and editing word processing documents, spreadsheets and computerized visual presentations. Currently, the Microsoft Office software products Word, Excel, and PowerPoint are being taught in depth. Besides office productivity tools, this course covers file management using the Microsoft Windows operating system.

Composition (ENG 101). This course was previously called English Composition ENG 101.  Course is listed under English in the online system.

Day and Time: Morning and  evening sessions are offered.  It is also offered online.

This course covers the study of writing and the writing process. Students analyze expository and/or literary works and prepare essays with attention to unity, organization, support and development.
Prerequisite: (a) Level III scores on both writing and reading placement tests; or (b) successful completion of English 043.

Classes begin on Thursday January 19, 2017. Returning students can register online.  In person registration hours. Until Friday January 13 registration hours are : Monday 8:30 am- 5:00 pm, Friday 8:30 am-3:00 pm.  Students can also register during the extended registration hours listed below.

*Students who wish to meet with a college counselor should plan on signing-in at the Counseling Office no later than 5pm to ensure that there will be sufficient advising time.
