Yes, I believe this is common. Instead of a travel charge, they are charging for the time/distance it will take them away from their home. I think this is a legitimate charge that many authors would consider if traveling a certain distance to make an appearance.

Subject: [CASL-L] visitor's speaking charge

Hi everyone,

For those of you who have had authors and speakers come to your school, have you ever been charged a "distance charge"? I am in the process of deciding whether I can afford a speaker to come and talk to our students and the rep. finally got back to me with this in the email:

"$500 distance charge outside M.'s immediate area because M. will have to dedicate an entire day to this visit."

I know that some authors will decrease their fees if they can go other nearby schools, but is this upcharge a common practice?

Thanks!
