[CASL-L] website evaluation

I am a fan of the idea of a framework for evaluating sources, but found that the CRAAP and other “tests” were usually too bulky and lacked an interactive component. My social studies department and I came up with a streamlined version that we embedded along with the note-taking they were already having students do on their sources; this brought the critical evaluation piece up “front” earlier in the research process and also helps scaffold students’ annotated bibliographies. It’s spilled over into other subjects and is now being widely used in science and English as well as social studies. Here’s one recent version:

With freshmen, we tend to scaffold it more (for example, by structuring it so they write a sentence under each of the individual letters). Here’s a link to a presentation I have done at CASL and CCSS with social studies colleagues that goes into more detail about our “journey” (I think we are on, like, our 7th version of this seemingly ever-evolving thing now): https://tinyurl.com/CCSSSurpassingCRAP
Nothing’s perfect, but overall I feel really good about the progress our school has made in the last few years in terms of critical source eval ☺

We use the CRAAP test in North Branford. Other resources we use: http://nbhs.northbranfordschools.org/Content/Website_Evaluation.asp
