[CASL-L] Biography/Memoir categories

The problem I always find with these kinds of breaking down any kind of books into categories is that there will be people who fall into two categories. How do you, then, make the decision where to put them?

Isn’t it easier to just tag books, or list them… or… something else? It’s worth thinking about ahead of time and having a plan.

Just a couple of cents on this matter,
Linda

Hello,

I have had the same thought and this past fall I created a spine label for "Artists" and "Writers/Authors."

I haven't thought through the other categories but I agree that it would make it easier for students to find something they were interested in if I categorized them.

Melissa

Hello,

After genrefying my teen fiction section, I'm thinking of tackling my biography section in a similar fashion. We have several classes that read biographies/memoirs and I would like to split them into categories to make it easier for the students to find one that they are interested in and/or fits their assignment. I'm having a harder time coming up with categories than I did when I was genrefying the fiction section. Have any of you have done this? If so, what are your categories? Any/all suggestions appreciated! Here is what I am thinking for categories: military, celebrities (singers/actors), historical & political figures, athletes, inspirational/overcoming adversity, scientists/explorers/inventors, medical, crime. Would love your thoughts on this...

Thanks & have a great day!
