Hi Katie,
Without knowing what this student is interested in personally (sports,
video games, etc.), it is hard to make a definite recommendation, but some
suggestions might be:

The Crossover books by Kwame Alexander
Soldier Boys by Dean Hughes
Swindle by Gordon Korman
The Invention of Hugo Cabret by Brian Selznick
The Bone Series by Jeff Smith
Unwind and Full Tilt by Neal Shusterman
