[CASL-L] public library cards for ResearchIT CT

At my school, I provide students with the State Library card application
and mail it for students. The cards are delivered to me and I distribute
through Freshman English teachers when they visit the library for my
research 101 presentation.

"The old idea of the librarian as a sort of recluse closeted with his books
and

interested only in them is the very antithesis of the modern librarian, who

must live with people equally with books, and who must also be keenly aware

of all that is going on in the world around him."

~Linda A. Eastman~ (Head Librarian of the Cleveland Public Library, 1918 to
1938)

Some high schools opt to place researchIT CT database links on a secure web
site to which students then login (once) with their school IDs. See, for
example:

As an independent school we have students from many towns in the area and
even international students. In order to access the ResearchIT CT databases
students need the barcode from the back of a public library card if they
are off campus. Many of my students don’t have library cards and although I
tell them to get one, I’m not sure how many actually listen to me.

When I worked in a public school we would invite the public librarians to
school to sign students up for cards. I can’t really do that here as it
would be impractical since there are so many towns. Do any of you have this
issue? If so, how did you address it? Or could someone from the State
Library weigh in, please?
