Hi all--

At GMHS, we are fortunate to have a healthy book budget--this past year it was $16,000 for a school of 650 students. This includes our funds for e-books, periodicals, etc. It is still a struggle to get students to check out library books--their schedules are so overwhelmed with course loads packed with AP courses, playing sports, part-time jobs, and on and on.

What HAS helped in the past few years is to have teachers in ALL subject areas to assign outside reading assignments, where students must choose a book and complete an assignment, either as part of their grade or as extra credit. Some examples are:

  * 9th grade science classes reading novels/nonfiction in which someone struggles against the environment somehow, where the natural environment has an impact on the story https://collections.follettsoftware.com/collection/5babc719373bc90011ccfdef
  * 12th grade civics classes must choose nonfiction about a current topic in politics/economy/social justice https://collections.follettsoftware.com/collection/5c5344bb515b2c00114b3e4e
  * Forensic Science classes chose mysteries or true crime and analyzed the forensics used to solve the crime https://collections.follettsoftware.com/collection/5c826b8b8e2d8e00129c2ee8
  * AP French class offered extra credit for reading novels/nonfiction about France in WWII
  * Anatomy and Physiology offered extra credit for reading about diseases/epidemics https://collections.follettsoftware.com/collection/5a2545a8ff202e0011e4c223
  * English assigns a book in conjunction with a play (play will be read in class, book will be read at home) ex. Romeo and Juliet, The Crucible https://collections.follettsoftware.com/collection/5a293ce3da23e30011495d94

Hope this is helpful to HS librarians out there--I know the struggle is real! Let's make a commitment to sharing our successes!

Subject: [CASL-L] Fiction Stats Thread ~ Budget

Hi,

I love the CASL thread pertaining to current fiction stats at our schools. It got me wondering about everyone's budget for books. We have, what I consider to be, a small book budget. It was slashed as soon as I was hired from $7000 (what the previous librarian had) down to $3000 (the budget amount I was given to work with since I came onboard). As you all are aware, $3,000 doesn't go very far. In addition to adding to our fiction collection that has been genrefied, we are in desperate need of updating our non-fiction collection. I ran a report for our NEASC review and was horrified at how old the collection was overall - fine for the classic literature section and perhaps historical topics, but not for science, technology, and current issues. So, if there is anyone who feels comfortable enough sharing budget info, I would be thankful for the insight.

PS: We were fortunate enough to obtain many books from the closing of the Willimantic Service Center. Those fiction titles, that we acquired, helped somewhat in filling out our collection.

Sincerely,

Michele Eligio
