Dear Participant,

I invite School Librarians and School Library Media Specialists to participate in a research study entitled: Current Trends of Censorship in Connecticut Elementary Schools: An inside look at how self-censorship and administrative pressure impacts book selection.” I am currently enrolled in the MLIS program at Southern CT State University and am in the process of writing my Special Project for graduation. The purpose of the research is to determine the amount of self-censorship that occurs in school libraries, and to determine if there is a correlation between self-censorship and book challenges.

The survey has been designed on Google Forms and is intended to collect information on current amounts of book bans, and challenges in Connecticut school libraries. The survey is also intended to find the role that administrators play in censorship. If you wish to participate the link to the questionnaire is below the last paragraph.

Your participation in this research project is completely voluntary. You do not have to complete the survey. Until submit is selected, answers will not be saved. You may leave certain questions blank, however, there are questions with a red asterisk, these must be answered, if you choose to complete the survey. There are no known risks to participation. Your responses will remain confidential and anonymous. You will not be asked you’re your name or school name, just the grade level at which you teach. No one other than the researchers will know your individual answers to this questionnaire.

If you agree to participate in this project, please answer the questions on the online questionnaire as best you can. It should take approximately 5 minutes to complete.

If you have any questions about this project, feel free to contact Sarah Brihan at brihans1 at southernct.edu <mailto:brihans1 at southernct.edu> . If you have questions regarding your rights as a research participant, you may contact the SCSU Institutional Review Board at (203) 392-5243.

Thank you for your assistance in this important endeavor.
