[CASL-L] restorative justice YA novel

57 Bus is a good one!

Touching Spirit Bear- by Ben Mikaelsen -deals with a young offender who is offered restorative justice as his sentence. It also has connections to bullying, environmental issues, and the outdoors and exercise as a means to healing- and includes (appropriates?) aspects of Tlingit culture. We used it as a whole school read when I was at East Hartford Middle School many many years ago as a vehicle to discuss bullying and other issues —we did it as a read aloud—and the students loved it. 

However, having said that, I haven’t read it recently so it may be outdated. In addition, I would read the review below first, and then if still interested, read the book- with a new lens-there have been criticisms of its handling of Tlingit culture. Those criticisms should be addressed if used.
