[CASL-L] Benefits of a LMS in a 1:1 school

That is a truly ignorant and scary position but, we are preaching to the choir. Here is a link to a Google Doc. I do not remember where it came from but, it was on of my library list servs. It is a list of over 100 things that SLMS do. Perhaps you could list the most salient ones to show to your administration.

I can't even imagine having to defend this now!!

This morning I already:

-Made an immigration booklist for a teacher
-Found the Portuguese language version of Night and added to Overdrive for an ESOL teacher
-Answered an email from the Drama Director about printing door hinges on my 3D printer
-Helped 5 kids find "books as windows, mirrors, and sliding glass doors" books that they would enjoy
-Called down my Kids' Lit Quiz students to give them an invite to the end of season celebration
-And added to my Black History Month bulletin board.
-Emailed a student about where to find a History Day graphic organizer.

After this email, I have to score a website evaluation assessment, make a form to ask kids for info about a "library takeover" event, add 6 books to the catalog that said not in system when checked in this morning, change the spine label and re-catalog a Holocaust diary, etc, etc. etc.

How do you explain that in a job description?

Our district is going to a 1:1 policy next year, with students being issued Chromebooks. We are also moving into a brand-new middle school, with a beautiful media center which the current LMS helped design. However, the superintendent has presented a budget which calls for eliminating the middle-school LMS and replacing that position with para/clerk, who will help supervise the 1:1 program. Reportedly, the administration claims that since the district is going to be 1:1, there's no need for a librarian at the middle school.

We know it's an uphill battle, but we're going to speak at the upcoming Board of Ed meeting Tuesday night to advocate for the position not being cut. We've been gathering information, have been in touch with CASL and ALA, and are buoyed by reports that many of the middle school students have created and signed a petition to protest the position being cut. What would be helpful would be for those of you who work in 1:1 districts, and in particular in middle schools in those districts, to send me a few bullet points about the importance of having a fully certified LMS even in a 1:1 school.

Thanks in advance for everyone's help and support.
