Port Chicago 50 - Steve Sheinkin (or pretty much anything by this author)
Steve Jobs: The Man Who Thought Different - Karen Blumenthal
The Great and Only Barnum! - Candace Fleming.  (CT connection)
The Rise and Fall of Senator Joe McCarthy - James Giblin
All of these were winners/honor titles of YALSA's Excellence in Nonfiction Award in the past decade.  The list of nominees for each year has some good suggestions, too.
