Hello all,
Happy New School Year! As you prepare for the upcoming year, I recommend
listening to this episode about rubrics from the Cult of Pedagogy podcast.
Although the guests are both high school teachers, I found some of the
"rubric tweaks and iterations" they suggested helpful even for those of us
at the grades 3-5 level: https://www.cultofpedagogy.com/hyperrubric/
Also worth a few minutes, the Edutopia article, Not Again! How to Keep from
Overextending Yourself this Year
<https://www.edutopia.org/article/not-again-how-keep-overextending-yourself-year>,
especially this advice regarding time-consuming grading:
*This year, commit to the one in four rule
<https://www.edutopia.org/video/6-teacher-approved-tips-faster-more-effective-feedback>,
where you give in-depth, specific feedback
<https://www.edutopia.org/grading-dilemma-strategies-tactics> for only one
out of four exercises, and assign the rest as credit or no credit,
recommends Rebecca Alber, an education professor at the University of
California, Los Angeles. Experienced teachers say it’s a life-changing
approach. Alternately, you can reduce grading by asking students to show
you their best work when they complete multiple assignments—grade only that
piece and check the remaining work for completion.*
Good luck!
