[CASL-L] student gmail password credentials

Hi Sara,

Our high school students can choose their own passwords. Normally they change them at set times during the school year. At this pandemic time, they only come to the library to change their passwords if they are having log in issues. We have a server called ActivDirectory where the librarians can access password changes. In normal times, students use the desktop computers and change their passwords without any assistance from the staff.

There is a generic password for new students. At present, they come to the library to change it, usually their first day in person. We ask if they want to choose their own. If they do, they write it on a sticky note. We enter the password and give the note back to them for their reference. If they forget their password, they have to come to the library to change it. As this is my first year at the high school, I’m not sure about the procedure for pre-pandemic, but believe the new students would have just come to the library to change their passwords on the desktops. Students are not able to change their password on a chromebook.

Good luck,
Lizanne

Hello! Curious what your district uses for student passwords!
Are you using student ID #s that could be/have been infiltrated?
Are you allowing or requiring students to change their passwords--and if so what happens when (not if) they forget what it is?
Looking at just high school right now.

Thank you! Looking forward to responses from the hive ASAP.
Sara
