[CASL-L] Subbing due to lack of coverage

I have a pretty full class schedule and I am a teacher’s plan period so I have fortunately not been pulled to sub. Last year though, our elementary libraries were closed for the year and the three of us were made classroom teachers for students who were fully remote.

We specials teachers at our elementary school have a very full class schedule so they can't pull us to sub. There are daily pleas for recess and lunch coverage, though.

At the elementary level, related arts teachers in my building are regularly assigned extra coverages in addition to teaching our own class schedules to cover for substitute shortage on any given day. Between last year and this one, I have worn many hats in addition to my own role having covered lunches, recesses, Spanish, PE, art, music, grade level classrooms, etc. It has been challenging to say the least.

Casey - fortunately I have never been asked to cover classes, and they have never sent a class to the library because of a shortage.

Dear colleagues—

How many of you spent a portion of the past week as a substitute because of the lack of classroom coverage by actual substitutes? It’s worse than ever this year, and not only when media specialists are covering classes, but also when one substitute covers multiple classes without coverage in the Media Center. Today we had one substitute covering six teachers’ classes in the MC, closed to all other students. It’s unfair to students, teachers, and substitutes, and I’m wondering how much worse it is in other districts.

Thanks in advance—
Casey
