[CASL-L] weeding of old history books

 Nikki,
Despite your best intentions, you may not like the answer.
When you say "old," do you mean "too old to be useful to the students," or "old enough to be considered historic (1920s/'30s)?"  It could also depend what you mean by "history."  Old textbooks, reference books, publishers' high school series, etc., are just "old," not "vintage," and the news isn't good for those.  1920s-era books written by actual historians, you might try the Pequot Library in Southport (part of Fairfield), CT.  They include vintage books in a special portion of their annual summer booksale--but just a warning, they're looking for hidden metaphorical diamonds as people clean out their grandparents' home libraries.  High quality, excellent condition, scholarly authors, etc. MAYBE "Dick and Jane" era schoolbooks.  For the others, and this is coming from someone who has loved books all her life and all her career as a librarian, one option is discarding  them.  Even if you send them to Goodwill, yes, it's possible that someone MIGHT buy them . . .  but will then send them to the dump, or back to Goodwill, anyway.  Judging from the wording of your email you already know this but:  DO NOT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES even think of sending them to a "needy" school or library.  They're not needy for outdated information in falling-apart packages; they're needy for the things your school is replacing those discards with, and deserve the same currency your students/patrons do.
Just one other possible suggestion:  Strand Bookstore in NYC has special collections it provides to movie sets, plays, "library" walls meant to be looked at but not read.  Depending on what you've got, they might be worth sending an email to.
And one last idea:  there are some cool crafts you can do with discarded books.  Books are intended to provide learning and enjoyment.  Giving them an afterlife as a newly discovered craft is a worthy end.
