I have also been working on this for the past two years. I just changed
from middle school to K-5 last year, in a K-8 school.
- I have the early readers as a call number ER XXX with popular series
in baskets. One resource list for all of them.
- I sorted out early nonfiction with a K-3 interest level and </= 3.0
reading level as ENF. The call numbers (regular Dewey) have ENF on top (in
Destiny only - as an adult aid), a sublocation of "ENF Topic," and each
book has a small blue sticker with the topic (ENF Animals) below the spine
label. Each topic has a resource list. They are shelved by topic (topics
are alphabetical order) and then Dewey within the topic. The shelves are
labeled with a small sign and a real image of the topic (since NF)
- I am working on the picture books by category. I use blank spine
labels and use Creative Commons animated/clip art images (since fictional)
with the category on the spine label. These go on the top of the spine. The
books also have the regular spine label. As in ENF, each category has a
resource list and a sublocation (E Pets). They are shelved by category and
alphabetical order by the author within the category. I have a long way to
go on these.
- We just finished genrefying the fiction (categorizing, labeling,
moving). I used color dots below the spine label or above depending on
space. These have a resource list for each genre and a sublocation of FIC
Genre (Color) like FIC Fantasy (Purple). I included Short Stories as
a genre and listed them as FIC XXX in Destiny.
- I have beginning chapter books separated out from FIC (K-3 interest
level of the FIC books) with a call number CHP.FIC XXX. I will genrefy
these later but keep them separate from FIC and grouped by genre. They are
just after the FIC on the shelves.
- I am choosing to keep the fiction (FIC, CHP.FIC, E) separate from NF
(ENF) so students understand the real vs. not real concept of the books.
- You can see the categories (E), topics (ENF), and genres (FIC,
CHP.FIC) I used here.

- Note on E: We have an equity initiative in our district and I chose to
classify what might be considered diverse/culturally and linguistically
relevant titles for picture books according to the plot/theme, and not as a
stand-alone category. So titles may be in Family and Our World & Me, but
they may also be in Arts, Feelings, Pets, or another category. Should there
be a request for a collection, I will do a search.
As others mentioned, I am doing this with the student use in mind, not
adults, so catalog searching will probably be needed!
