[CASL-L] Crayola Creativity Week

I looked at the Crayola materials, then did my own thing. It is Kindness
Week at our school, so I am reading kindness stories, and don't have time
for a 20 min. video from Crayola also. But this was fun, and worked well:
I showed grade 4 the emoji picture (I think that's Tuesday's theme) - the
author and a picture with 4 emojis. I talked about it, then gave them a
template with 5 blank circles, read Tucky Jo and Little Heart by P.
Polacco aloud, and while I read the students filled in the circles with
emojis reflecting how they were feeling at different points in the story.
I have a portable white/magnetic board, and they hung them up on it. Fun
and effective! I urged them to be creative and expressive and they were!
With Kindergarten (not related to Crayola, except for the crayons and
creativity), I read Mouse and Hippo by Mike Twohy, gave the students paper
and crayons, and stopped the story at 2 points, for them to draw Hippo, and
later to draw Mouse, before seeing how the characters in the book did that
same thing. Really fun!
